The report updates insights from an April/May baseline, examines evolving reopening strategies, learning recovery approaches, and remote-delivery priorities, and analyzes challenges and the factors shaping response effectiveness. It also compares remote learning perceptions for English versus other subjects, within defined research ethics.","English language teaching and Covid-19 \nA global snapshot of Ministries of Education responses during the period of school reopening, in the state primary and secondary sector \nOctober 2020 \nContents \nContents .....................................................................................................................................2 \nAim .............................................................................................................................................. 3 \nApproach ....................................................................................................................................4 \nResearch ethics .........................................................................................................................4 \nStructure of the survey..............................................................................................................4 \nScope and timing ....................................................................................................................... 5 \nAcknowledgements ...................................................................................................................6 \nInsights ....................................................................................................................................... 7 \nKey insights................................................................................................................................ 8 \nSummary of key insights......................................................................................................... 10 \nLimitations and conclusions................................................................................................... 11 \nInsights in detail....................................................................................................................... 12 \nSection 1 : Aggregated global response in relation to the current situation ........................ 12 \nSection 2: A comparative ranking of the most significant challenges during the previous six months as seen now in comparison to the most significant challenges reported in April/May............................................................................................................................................ 17 \nSection 3: A ranking of the factors that affected Ministries of Education response to the impact of school closure and their relative significance ......................................................20 \nSection 4: Perceptions of the remote learning of English in comparison with the remote learning of other subjects ....................................................................................................22 \nSection 5: Current challenges ............................................................................................24 \nAppendix 1: Survey questions................................................................................................26 \nAppendix 2: Key insights from the April/May snapshot .......................................................33 \nAim \nIn late April/early May this year we produced an initial snapshot of how Ministries of Education were responding to the challenges of the educational crisis in respect of English language teaching and learning.
