information,and that each writer must be held responsible for his own views  \n# GERMAN COLONIES IN AFRICA\n\nTHE momentous war which is now absorbing the attentionof more than half the civilised world has drawn attention tothe fact that Germany possesses four well-organised coloniesin Africa,each a factor to be reckoned with in the event of aEuropean war.On the south is German South West Africa;on the west Togoland and Kamerun;on the east GermanEast Africa.  \nGerman South West Africa.  \nGerman South West Africa is not a specially attractiveland.Copper mining has been tried for years.Agriculturedoes not prosper,the rainfall being small and the only othermoisture being dense fogs which rise daily.From May toSeptember the climate is cold and dry;for the other sixmonths of the year it is hot and rainy.Vegetables,however,as the Rhenish missionaries proved more than sixty yearsago,do fairly well.  \n# JOURNAL OF THE AFRICAN SOCIETY\n\nNevertheless,it is a vast land,square miles in area,as big as Norway and Sweden combined.From north tosouth for ten degrees of latitude it borders on Bechuanaland;on the south the Orange River for about 300 miles from itsmouth separates it from Cape Colony.One lucky day inJuly,I908,a little stir was created by the discovery ofdiamonds in Luderitz Bay;during I9I2 they produced766,465 carats at a total value of f968,423.  \nApart from this and the rich guano beds¹near by at AngraPequena there is little of profit except cattle breeding andwool production,truly a dreary prospect,except for the few.Nobody was likely to be very enthusiasitc over such acountry.  \nGermany,however,had a little surprise in her powerfulwireless station at Windhoek,the administrative capital.ThePress announced that it could communicate with Berlin,  \n6,000 miles away.Two other wireless stations were alsoannounced,one in Togoland on the west,the other at Dares-Salaam in German Africa on the east—south,west,east,awireless station admirably placed to command the triangularpart of Africa's seaboard.Their strategic value for the useof cruisers hostile to shipping from the Cape and Natal,whether by the eastern or western route,was assuredly not amere accident.  \nGerman East Africa.  \nDar es-Salaam,the German-planned capital of the EastAfrica Protectorate,has its gardens and avenue reminiscentof the Tiergarten and the Unter
