A pre/post survey evaluated students’ competence and confidence with older people and was administered to first-year students before the program and again after completion in academic years 2020–2021 through 2023–2024. Results using RStudio showed a 26% response rate with no significant overall changes in interest or readiness/competence, while paired assessments revealed improved perceived readiness and confidence and increased self-reported knowledge of older adult healthcare needs. These outcomes suggest a mentor model may support age-friendly care training despite a limited sample size.",{"@graph":14,"@context":77},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/healthcare/","Healthcare",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/geriatrics-education-mentor-gem-program-outcomes-from-pairing-students-and-older-adults-during-medical-school/426262/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/geriatrics-education-mentor-gem-program-outcomes-from-pairing-students-and-older-adults-during-medical-school/426262.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Dipper","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-09","2026-09-29",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",9,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69,73],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What is the GEM program and how is it implemented in medical school?","Question",{"text":63,"@type":64},"The GEM program is an experiential education component where students are paired with older adults to complete five home visits and geriatrics-specific assignments during the first and second year curriculum.","Answer",{"name":66,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":67},"How was students’ competence and confidence measured?",{"text":68,"@type":64},"A pre/post survey design assessed students’ competence and confidence with older adults. A pre/post survey design assessed students’ competence and confidence with older people (assigned GEMs) . The survey was emailed to first-year medical students (avg. 174/class) before they began GEMs and was sent again upon completion of the program at the end of their second year during academic years 2020-2021 through 2023-2024. Data were analyzed in RStudio. Results had a 26% response rate that included overall data (N= 133/Pre & N =138/ post), 24 responses were matched assessments. No significant change in students’ interest (p > 0.4), perceived readiness and competence (p >0.07), or confidence in working with older adults (p >0.5) was revealed. However, perceived readiness and confidence increased from pre-to post-test, indicating that a larger sample size might reveal significance. Self-reported knowledge of older adult healthcare needs increased, pre- to post-test, with the paired subset showing a significant increase (p \u003C 0.015) . Although a small sample, these findings provide a foundation for medical schools to consider implementing a mentor type program to augment medical student skill/knowledge in older adult health care to advance age-friendly health care. \nAbstract citation ID: igaf122.3510 \nGERIATRICS EDUCATION MENTOR (GEM) PROGRAM: \nOUTCOMES FROM PAIRING STUDENTS AND OLDER \nADULTS DURING MEDICAL SCHOOL \nHannah Griffin1, David Wihry2, and Marilyn Gugliucci3, \n1.
