It contrasts hostile labels such as bigot, demagogue, and “American Hitler” with the argument that Wallace reflects long social, economic, and historical development. political life has beenso universally condemned as Alabama's GovernorGeorge Corley Wallace. The news media has brandedhim as a bigot, who has based his entire political ca-reer and his presidential aspirations on the fears of thewhite lower middle class. Some of the more extremespokesmen of the liberal community have anathema-tized him as an“American Hitler,”who would set raceagainst race and plunge the United States down the roadto genocide.Others have castigated him as a typicalSouthern demagogue, who appeals to race prejudice inorder to obscure his failure to answer the pressingsocial and economic needs of his own state.GovernorWallace is regarded by the liberal intellectual estab-lishment as the most dangerous man in American po-litical life. Were he to win the presidency, they warnthen democracy itself would be dangerouslyimpaired, and the United States would become an openly racistsociety much like the Union of South Africa. Those whosupport the philosophy which George Wallace embodiesare denounced as rural boors or small town bigots whoare trying to turn back human progress to protect theirown vested interests in the social status quo.It is notconsidered fashionable or polite to support the politicalprogram championed by Governor Wallace, and thosewho secretly back him are most reluctant to openly ad-mit it.However, mere condemnation of George Wallaceand the beliefs for which he stands accomplish little ornothing.Whatever one may think of him and hís politics,it should be recognized that George Wallace is the \nproduct of long social, economic, and historicaldevel-opment.He articulates the fears and aspirations of tensof millions of working-class Americans who are enti-tled to receive the same considerations from the liberalpolitical establishment as the more vocal minorities.Rather than being condemned,George Wallace and hissupporters should be understood, their fears allayed, and their real needs served. \nTHE WALLACE FAMILY Of English stock, the firstWallaces came to America sometime in the eighteenthcentury and settled along the North Carolina frontier. Not much is known about them, except that they pro-duced a number of Methodist ministers. For the mostpart they were small independent farmers, and aroundthe time of the American Revolution they beganto pushonto the Alabama frontier. The Wallaces eventuallysettled in the village of Clio which was 17 miles fromClayton, the county seat of Barbour,Alabama.George'sgreat-grandfather served in the army of the Confeder-acy and was wounded at the Battle of Lookout Mountainwhich ","cbCaicBy9I6wRMHV","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicBy9I6wRMHV","pdf",2934023,"English","# Summary and Context\n## Public Condemnation and Political Meaning\n# Wallace
