The genres can be delineated in terms of two classificatory dimensions (Hakulinen, 2009): degree of formality and context. As Hakulinen argues, no single typology can capture the variety and richness of conversational genres. Another typology for the categorization of genres of spoken interaction is based on three dimensions: the interaction channel, the dyadic versus multiparty nature of interaction, and the institutionality versus (non)institutionality of interaction. \nThe channel dimension for the classification of genres of spoken interaction has three facets: auditory, visual, and visual-cum-auditory (multimodal) . Visually oriented face-to-face interaction takes precedence over the other types, whereas auditory conversation features in other genres such as telephone conversations. Visual-cum-auditory interaction is possible through talk on mobile devices or Web-based interactions. The growth of the Internet and computer-mediated communication has given rise to forms of interaction that are in written modality but, in reality, represent spoken interaction. Although channel is often a dimension that is used to distinguish one genre from another (e.g., face-to-face and telephone conversations), genres across spoken interactions follow the same sequential organization irrespective of differences in channel (Hakulinen, 2009) . However, some features are channel specific. For instance, the beginning and closing of conversations, backchannels, the use of body language, and visual cues are all managed depending on the channel. \nThe second classificatory dimension is the number of interactants. Dyadic conversation involves two interactants while multiparty talk can include many participants. The dyadic versus multiparty nature of interaction has a crucial influence on the patterns of interaction. One key influence is on turn-taking patterns and turn allocation. In dyadic conversations, speaker and hearer incessantly take turns, following the recurring pattern of AB BA AB with some variability when two speakers talk simultaneously because of not understanding the turn transition \nThe TESOL Encyclopedia of English Language Teaching, First Edition. \nEdited by John I. In multiparty talk, however, turn allocation tends to be more complex. The possible strategies are self-selection, stealing the turn, and selection by the current speaker by naming the addressee or by gaze. \nThe third dimension of the genres of spoken interaction hinges on the use of language in ordinary or institutional contexts. While the dichotomy is rather blurred and can better be viewed as a continuum, ordinary talk typically occurs in private or domestic contexts between interactants with rather close relationships, such as family members and friends. In ordinary talk, interactants usually have equal discursive rights, which shape more flexible and symmetrical turn-taking patterns. Cameron (2001) regards this type of spoken interaction as basic and more fundamental because it is vital to children’s development of communicative competence, is the predominant kind of talk, and is adopted as a benchmark to characterize the more formal institutional talk. Unlike ordinary talk, institutional talk happens in less casual settings and includes doctor-patient interactions, business meetings, service encounters, and teacher–student interactions in classrooms. Institutional talk is characterized as a type of interaction that is more oriente","cbCaicA2o8xjb2gt","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicA2o8xjb2gt","pdf",458688,"English","# Framing the Issue\n## Defining Genres of Spoken Interaction\n## Channel, Interactants, and Sequential Organization\n## Ordinary vs. Institutional Talk\n## Symmetry and Status in Interaction","[{\"question\":\"What does “genres of spoken interaction” refer to?\",\"answer\":\"It refers to talk-in-interaction involving two or many interactants in everyday or institutional contexts, with genres distinguished by classificatory dimensions such as formality and context.\"},{\"question\":\"How does interaction channel influence conversational genres?\",\"answer\":\"Channel includes auditory, visual, and multimodal forms.
