While modern humans are not the fastest animals, our capacity for long-distance running, a key evolutionary advantage, is attributed to adaptations like larger gluteal muscles, reduced body fur, and increased sweat glands for thermoregulation. The research indicates that approximately two to three million years ago, coinciding with the emergence of the Homo genus, a mutation in the CMAH gene altered cell surface sugar molecules. This alteration is hypothesized to have made muscle tissue less susceptible to fatigue. Experiments with mice possessing this mutation showed an increased capacity for sustained running, greater mileage on exercise wheels, and enhanced capillary networks in leg muscles, which improves nutrient and oxygen delivery during exercise. These findings, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, suggest that this genetic tweak could have provided early humans with a distinct competitive advantage, potentially explaining how our ancestors excelled in endurance activities.
