While it is a powerful and transformative discipline, it is not always the easiest system to approach. Many people are drawn to it through books, videos, and courses, only to discover the challenges and limitations they face—particularly in their body and energy. \nFrom my 40 + years of teaching experience, I’ve found that Yantra Yoga isn’t always the most accessible or appropriate system for everyone, especially when starting out. For this reason, we’ve introduced modifications, such as Soft Yantra, Chair Yantra, and simplified pranayamas. These adaptations can make the practice more approachable and help prepare the body and mind to engage with Yantra Yoga effectively. \nBuilding a Foundation \nSome people who attend Yantra Yoga sessions arrive with little or no regular movement practice. They may not feel particularly flexible and often face stiffness, tightness, or health issues etc,This is perfectly normal. For older practitioners or those recovering from injuries, it’s important to remember that movement and bodywork, even though they may not have the same focus or share the same method of breathing, also whether it’s more external as in sports, gym exercises, dance, Pilates etc, or more inner work as Qi Gong,Tai Qi, and the many types of yoga, or the more subtle and secret aspect we can find in the main practices, all can play an essential role in building the physical and energetic readiness needed for Yantra Yoga. \nAs a practitioner interested in Dzogchen, it’s important first to observe yourself and understand what you bring to the mat. Ask yourself: \n􀁸 What physical movements, stretches, and breathing practices can I use to open, relax, tone, and strengthen my body? \n􀁸 How can I harmonise my postural habit’s to optimise alignment and offset wear and tear in my joints, as well as balancing circulation of Lung in the Tsa or Prana in our Nadi? \n􀁸 How can I work with my breath and energy to gradually approach the more intricate and subtle aspects of Yantra Yoga? \n􀁸 What obscuration’s, tensions blockages , and habit’s etc,( Tib gegsel) do I notice and would like to lessen or clear them. \nThese preliminary steps are part of the journey inward toward the cushion, where you can focus on the subtler aspects of prana, breathing, and mind. \nAdapting Yantra Yoga to Meet Individual Needs \nYantra Yoga offers a comprehensive framework for working with body, speech/energy, and mind. However, many postures and movements can feel inaccessible for those new to yoga or dealing with injuries or restrictions. In these cases: \n􀁸 Adapting the Practice: Incorporate movements and exercises recommended from Bodywork therapists, or from other easer forms of yoga or systems that help open the body and prepare it for more advanced movents and positions . \n􀁸 Exploring Variations: Use modifications, preparatory exercises, and gradual progressions to access challenging positions over time, the new book on Yantra yoga offers many movements for training at the back, but mostly they show movements, not much staying in postures holding for several breaths , different methods of stretching and holding longer maybe helpful. \n􀁸 Being Practical: The goal isn’t to force yourself into postures but to develop awareness and flow in your movements, allowing breathing and mindfulness to guide you. \nPractical Advice for Those Starting or Returning \n1. Start Where You Are \nRecognize that tightness, stiffness, or blocked areas in your body are normal starting points. They are also diagnostic; Observe these areas with patience and work to gradually lengthen the muscles and facia, opening the channels, Tsa , Nadi or meridians, just as you would in therapeutic bodywork. \n2.
