Gender-inclusive language, or gender-neutral language, is language that avoids bias toward a particular sex or social gender and therefore is less likely to convey gender stereotypes. \nIn the use of the English language, the use of masculine nouns/pronouns in a generic fashion was standard practice until the 1970s, when the women’s movement challenged it. Since then, by“uncovering the gendered nature of many linguistic rules and norms\"1, feminist linguists contributed to the wider adoption of gender-neutral language to convey inclusion of all sexes or genders. \nThese guidelines by UN Women seek to assist in the gender-inclusive writing, review and translation of English-language documents. Similar guidelines are available also in French and Spanish to ensure gender-inclusive use of language in French and Spanish documents. \nThese guidelines are living documents. We look forward to receiving feedback and contributions for future editions to further enrich the collection. You can send your suggestions to: [genderterm@unwomen.org](genderterm@unwomen.org). \nOur Goal: A text conveying gender equality \nSeveral strategies can be adopted to promote gender equality through language in a document, while writing in a clear and fluid way to retain the document’s communicative goals: \nA) Use gender-neutral expressions \nB) Use inclusive language \nC) Use both feminine and masculine forms \n-as separate words \n-through the use of slashes \nWriters should always consider the text as whole and its nature when choosing among the different strategies. Gender-inclusive writing should not affect the readability of a text. \n1 Anne Pauwels (2003) . \"Linguistic Sexism and Feminist Linguistic Activism\", in The Handbook and Language of Gender, eds. Janet Holmes and. Miriam Meyerhoff. Oxford. Blackwell Publishing. \nA: Use gender-neutral expressions \nAvoid gender-specific nouns when making generic references \nWriters should avoid expressions that use the masculine form when making generic references to both men and women, i.e. using congressmen when referring to both female and male legislators. \nWhenever possible, use a gender-neutral alternative. \n\n| Avoid | Prefer |\n| --- | --- |\n| Men, mankind | People, humanity, human beings, humankind, we, women and men |\n| Businessmen | Representatives, business community, business people |\n| Chairman | Chair, chairperson, head |\n| Congressman | Legislator, congressional representative, parliamentarian |\n| Guys (referred to men and women) | All |\n| Man-made disaster | Human induced disaster |\n| Policeman | Police officer |\n| Steward, stewardess | Flight attendant |\n| Freshman student | First-year student |\n| Landlord, landlady | Owner |\n| Layman, common man | layperson, average person |\n| Boyfriend/girlfriend or husbands/wife | Partners, spouses |\n\nB: Use inclusive language \nIn English, the use of the generic masculine form to refer to both genders creates a gender bias. Whenever possible, writers should look at ways to modify the sentence to make it genderneutral. Here are a few options: \na) Omitting the masculine reference word \n\n| Avoid | Prefer |\n| --- | --- |\n| Each professor should send one of his assistants to the conference. | Each professor should send one assistant to the conference. |\n| A good employee knows that he should strive for excellence. | A good employee strives for excellence. |\n\nb) Using plural forms for both nouns and reference words \n\n| Avoid | Prefer |\n| --- | --- |\n| Each participant must present his ID badge. | All participants must present their ID badges. |\n| A representative must listen to his supporters. | Representatives must listen to their supporters.
