verypleasant and full of vitality. \nVery sincerely yours, \nR.W.BURPEE,Program Secretary \n# PREFACE\n\nI \nWAS BORN December 17th,1868,in FayetteTownship,Linn County,Iowa, and am living within2%miles of the spot where I was born, and thelonger I stay here, the better I enjoy life.I am livingon the same farm that my parents moved on when Iwas twelve years old. \nThere were two steam boats plying the Cedar Riverat that time, and they used to whistle for me when theywere coming around the bend about 15miles north ofCedar Rapids, and I would go down and help the crewload the barge with cord wood that was corded on thebank of the river. They paid me ffteen cents per hourand gave me my dinner besides.I had a lot of funwith them, and they did, too. \nThere was plenty of game of all kinds, and the riverwas teeming over with fish of most every specie.Dadcaught a fish one day;after he dressed it and cut it up,and salted it down we had a 3 gallon jar,a 4 gallonjar,a 5 gallon jar,and a 6 gallon jar full of meat.Iheard him tell the story to a merchant in town.Themerchant asked him,“How much lard did you get?” \nMost everyone has a hobby—experiences of allkinds. It has been said that life is just what you makeit.I believe in cause and effect pretty strong.A num-ber of years ago I tried my hand at writing poetry, and most every one I wrote I would read it or speak itto different persons and they would exclaim,\"Whydon’t you have that printed?”or\"Won't you writethat off for me?”,so I decided to print them in bookform so everyone could get a copy.I claim they willbe as interesting in a thousand years from now as theyare today. \nCONTENTS \nPAGE \nIn The Beginning \n…………………8 \nWhen the Fish Are Biting All the Time……………………………9 \nVogel's Jubilee__
