For example groups of Black youths living in Brixton who saw smoking marijuana and committing crimes as normal and acceptable behaviour. These groups formed a distinctive sub-culture with alternative values, they had become excluded from mainstream society and as a consequence they turned to criminal acts including drug dealing and violence in defence of their ‘territory’.  \nThis is a level 3 response.  \nThis student provides a coherent description of a criminal sub-culture that demonstrates both knowledge and understanding of the concept.  \n3 marks  \nStudent response 3  \nOne example of a criminal subculture would be the juvenile delinquents (working class boys) studied by the sociologist Albert Cohen. Cohen found that the middle class values and expectations of schools caused problems for working class boys who were unable to successfully compete with their middle class peers. Their feelings of frustration led them to form an anti-school subculture which gave them status, after the school had labelled them as failures.
