It outlines the structure of a balanced curriculum, the required core subjects, and the range of optional subjects available. The guide emphasizes considerations such as strengths and interests, the value of Modern Foreign Languages and Humanities, and planning for post-16 pathways including A Levels and Russell Group destinations. Additional guidance addresses learning needs and decision-making processes with tutors and subject teachers.","GCSE \nCurriculum \nGuide \n2025 - 26 \nTrent College \nThe start of GCSE courses in Year 10 is a milestone in thecareer of all Trent pupils and is an opportunity for ourpupils to make some important informed choices aboutthe future direction of their education. This booklet hasbeen written by Heads of Academic Departments and isdesigned to give an overview of the subjects availablenext year and to explain the decision-making process. \nSo far at Trent, your child will have enjoyed a broadrange of subjects and many pupils at this stage will havea clear idea of what they would like to study next yearand possibly even beyond. However, for many, subjectchoices are less obvious; pupils should look to theirindividual subject teachers and their tutor for additionalinformation about subjects and guidance about thechoices process, where necessary. \nAs well as allowing for a degree of choice, the GCSEcurriculum at Trent is designed to afford each pupilaccess to a core set of subjects and a broad educationalexperience, such that they will have many optionsavailable to them post-16 . With this in mind, allcompulsory subjects are represented in this booklet, \nin addition to those that your child may opt for. Withuniversities increasingly looking at GCSE grades toinform their selection process, this is vitally important. \nCareer aspirations might play some role in the decision -making process at this stage, although GCSE subjectchoices should be made based on a pupil’s interests andstrengths, as this is most likely to lead to enjoyment andsuccess. \nI hope that your child is looking forward to thechallenges that lie ahead in Years 10 and 11 and that youfind this booklet useful in your conversations with them. Please get in touch at any stage if you have any furtherquestions about the choices process. \nMs Sarah HoughHead of Main School \n GCSE Curriculum \nContents \nThe GCSE Curriculum 4 \nGCSE Options 6 \nGCSE Core Subjects* \nEnglish Language and English Literature 7 \nMathematics 8 \nBiology, Chemistry and Physics (3 GCSEs)** 10–12 \nCombined Science (2 GCSEs)** 13 \nGCSE Subject Options \nArt 14 \nBusiness (Developing Enterprising Minds) 16 \nComputer Science 18 \nDesign & Technology 19 \nDrama 20 \nFood & Nutrition 22 \nGeography 23 \nHistory 25 \nModern Languages (French, German, Spanish) 26 \nMusic 27 \nPhysical Education 28 \nPsychology 30 \nRS: Philosophy and Ethics 31 \n*Core Subjects are compulsory and must be completed as part of the curriculum requirements. \n** Pupils will choose either Biology, Chemistry and Physics as 3 separate GCSEs or Combined Science. \n2 \n3 \nTrent College \nThe GCSECurriculum \nYear 10 is an exciting stage for all pupils as, for the firsttime, they get to choose many of the subjects that theywish to follow for the next two years.
