friends,Mr.and Mrs.Harold White.Mr.White,Director of The Leagrave Press in Luton, and his wife haddriven to Ayot St.Lawrence to witness the signing of Shaw's LastWill and Testament. At the editor's request Mrs.White has kindlywritten the following descripition of the occasion: \nIt was a beautiful summer day when we drove over to Ayot St.Lawrence in glorious sunshine to witness Mr.Shaw's signature tohis Will. When we arrived,we went into the drawing room whichlooked very fresh with bowls of red poppies. \nAfter a chat with Mr.Shaw,he produced the Will, which wasready on a secretaire. In his soft Irish voice,he made some jokesabout his Wills, saying that it had always been a foible of his to havedistinguished people witness them and that the worst job was not\"the signing of it,but the initialling of the damned thing.\"He saidthis as we went through the fourteen large pages, each of whichhad to be initialled by the three of us.He asked me if I had anyother occupation besides that of a housewife(as identified in thesubscript to the Will, page 19)and I replied“No,that was quiteenough.” \nMr.Shaw seemed very relieved when it was finished, sayingthat the Will and the\"Rhyming Picture Guide to Ayot St.Lawrence\"were the two things he was most anxious to complete, and now theWill was finished. We sat down and chatted for about half-an-hour. \nThese memories will remain with me always, and I shall neverforget those bright blue eyes of this old man of 93,his soft Irishvoice and his extreme politeness and courtesy. He was a gentleman. \nBarely three months later,on September 11th,while working inhis garden,Shaw fell, fracturing his left femur. On November 2nd,1950,he died. \nShaw's Will provided for the disposition of one of the largest estatesamassed in the profession of literature. On March 24,1951,The(Lon-don)Times announced that it amounted to £367,233($1,028,252.40)with a net value of £301,585,on which duty of £180,571 was paid. \nIt is not the purpose of this note to provide biographical elaborationor to make any interpretive comment concerning Shaw's Will.Thecomplete text is printed here without alteration.Variant spellings andpunctuation are reproduced as written. The original document, handengrossed by Edward Giles,is in the custody of Her Majesty's PrincipalProbate Registrar,Somerset House,London. \nWilliam D.Chase \nBERNARD SHAW'S LAST WILL
