Definitions distinguish reflux esophagitis as esophageal mucosal injury from retrograde gastric flux, and NERD as typical GERD symptoms without endoscopic evidence of esophageal erosion. Typical manifestations include heartburn and acid regurgitation, supported by moderate-to-high sensitivity and specificity based on endoscopy or ambulatory pH studies. GERD develops when esophageal mucosa is exposed to gastroduodenal contents for prolonged periods, usually due to impaired anti-reflux mechanisms.
