INFORMATION \nAlthough mopeds have long been a favoritein Europe,it is only recently that they havebecome popular in the United States.Todaythey are more numerous and are ridden moreoften than ever before. \nThe majority of moped dealers also sellbicycles or motorcycles. The number of compe-tent mechanics available cannot keep pace withthe demand.Moped owners must often do theirown maintenance and repair. \nMoped maintenance and repair is not dif-ficult if you know what tools to use and what todo.Anyone not afraid to get his or her handsdirty,of average intelligence, and with enoughmechanical ability to change a light bulb canperform most of the procedures in this book. \nIn some cases,a repair job may require toolsor skills not reasonably expected of the homemechanic. These instances are noted in eachchapter and it is recommended that you takethe job to your dealer,a competent mechanic ormachine shop. \n## BASIC COMPONENTS\n\nBasically the moped is an engine poweredbicycle. It has two pedals and can be ridden asan ordinary bicycle without running the engine.Figure 1 shows the major components of theGarelli. \nFrame \nThe frame is a heavy duty,step-through bicy-cle frame with provisions for an engine. \nEngine \nThe engine is a very simple one-cylinder,2-stroke engine cooled by air.It produces approx-imately two horsepower. This is the same typeof engine used on outboard motors, lawnmowers, and many motorcycles. It is veryreliable and it is easy to maintain. \nClutch/Transmission \nThe clutch/transmission is automatic, that is,there are no gears to shift and no clutch pedalor lever to worry about. The engine power istransferred to the rear wheel by a drive chainjust like on a bicycle or motorcycle. \nSuspension \nSpring type front forks and rear shock ab-sorbers smooth out rough roads. These aresimilar to those used on motorcycles but aresimpler and require very little maintenance. \nBrakes \nThe brakes are operated by levers on thehandlebar, similar to those used on bicycles and \n2 3 1416516 \n9 10 11 \n## GENERALINFORMATION\n\nGARELLI \n## COMPONENTS\n\n1.Headlight \n2.Side reflex reflector(amber)
