It presents three space-saving approaches: shallow beds, tyre gardens, and “door frame” beds, outlining materials, construction steps, and key care needs. The guidance emphasizes preparing suitable growing mediums with compost and mulch, protecting soil moisture through regular watering, and adapting layouts to small rooftops or hard, low-fertility ground.","Gardening in Small Spaces \nlevel: basic \nEnglish Agriculture \nGardening in Small Spaces \nThis material was taken from Footsteps \nthe literary publication of TEAR Fund with kind permission \nEnglish Oxfordshire, England \nCopyright © 2019, MissionAssist \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. They take up very little space, and if you have a flat roof, the first two are light enough to be built on top. \nShallow Beds \nMake a frame with four pieces of wood about 2-2½ inches (5- 6 cms) high. Cover the frame completely with plastic sheeting, and fill the shallow bed that you have made with soil or compost and mulch. \nCompost is a mixtures of rotted grass, leaves and other soft green matter that has been left for a few weeks to break down. You can also put waste fruit and vegetable peelings in. Mix it well with some soil. If your soil is very sandy or very thick clay, use a lot of compost. \nMulch is dried grass or leaves which you place on top of the soil after you have planted herb or vegetable seeds in the soil. It helps to stop the soil from drying out. Even so, shallow beds will dry out very quickly, so water them frequently. \nTyre Gardens \nAnother type of small garden you can make is a Tyre Garden. It can be placed on a roof top, and is light enough to \nmove around. \nFind an old tyre and lay it flat on the ground. Cut off the top rim with a sharp knife or machete. \nPlace a piece of old chicken wire over the base of the tyre. Now cover the base of the tyre completely with a piece of plastic sheet. It should be large enough to go a little way up the sides of the tyre. \nTake the top rim of the tyre that you cut off, turn it upside down and fit it tightly over the bottom rim. It will hold the plastic sheet firmly in place. Fill the tyre with good soil or compost-follow the instructions on page 3. \nPlant herb or vegetable seeds in the soil, and cover them with mulch, as on page 3. \nKeep the soil well watered, as it will quickly dry out. \n‘Door Frame’ Beds \nIf you have a sm","cbCaipg1e8sGs7Ic","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipg1e8sGs7Ic","pdf",757829,5,1,17,"English","en",105,"# Gardening in Small Spaces\n## Shallow Beds\n## Tyre Gardens\n## “Door Frame” Beds","[{\"question\":\"What are the three small-space gardening ideas covered in the booklet?\",\"answer\":\"The booklet describes shallow beds, tyre gardens, and “door frame” beds for growing herbs and vegetables in limited space.\"},{\"question\":\"How should compost and mulch be used in shallow beds?\",\"answer\":\"Compost is mixed with soil to improve the growing medium, especially if soil is sandy or clay.
