Home gardens help bodies resist disease and can improve health, especially where changing diets, fewer crop types, deforestation, and reduced access to wild foods contribute to malnutrition. The guide explains how to design and maintain gardens to address local nutrient gaps, suggests protein-, calcium-, iron-, vitamin A and vitamin C rich crops, and recommends practical steps like mulching, shading, weed control, and using compost or containers where land is limited.","Gardening for Better Nutrition \nlevel: intermediate \nEnglish Agriculture \nGardening for Better Nutrition \nEnglish Berkshire, England \nCopyright © 2021, MissionAssist \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. These gardens can help provide variety in the diet and supply vital minerals and vitamins, carbohydrates and proteins. Good nutrition helps people’s bodies to resist disease, so home gardens help improve family health. \nIn recent years, many people’s traditional diets have changed. More processed foods are now eaten. Rural farmers may now grow crops to sell rather than for family use. This may mean they grow fewer types of crop and are less inclined to plant vegetables. \nWild leaves, roots and berries, which traditionally were harvested for food, may no longer be available as a result of deforestation and loss of communal land. \nBecause of these trends, the diets of many people have lost their original variety and they may lack enough income to buy a varied and adequate diet. \nHome gardens can help improve family nutrition and health by making it possible to grow a variety of useful crops, including medicinal plants, and may produce a small surplus which can be sold at nearby markets. \nStarting and maintaining a home garden is a project that is likely to appeal to women, since they are usually the ones who prepare, process and store family food supplies. Moreover, pregnant and nursing mothers and young children are the family members most likely to suffer from malnutrition. \nOne advantaHome gardens can help improve family nutrition and health by making it possible to grow a variety of useful crops, including medicinal plants, and may produce a small surplus which can be sold at [nearby markets.ge](nearby markets.ge) of a home garden project is that it can be designed to take into account any specific local cause of malnutrition. Where lack of protein is known to be a problem for example, your home garden could include the growing of high-protein crops, such as peas and beans of all kinds, groundnuts etc. Also consider planting a few trees that produce proteinrich foods, such as an avocado tree for its fruits, or a moringa tree for its leaves. \nAnother possibility would be to use some of the space in your garden to rear small animals e.g. rabbits for meat, or poultry for both eggs and meat. If you have room for a small pond or water tank, you could also raise fish, which are another good source of protein. \nSmall fish eaten whole i.e. with the bones are also a good source of calcium, as are dark green vegetables such as spinach, kale or other leafy greens. The same vegetables can also help to overcome a lack of iron (which can cause anaemia) anda lack of Vitamin A. \nOther crops that are rich in Vitamin A and therefore help to prevent night blindness (and general ill health) are carrots and sweet peppers. Sweet peppers are also rich in another important vitamin, Vitamin C, as are tomatoes, guavas and citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons. \nSetting up a home garden project \nEven in urban areas there may be a small area of land outside your home or by the roadside which you can cultivate. In any case, whether your home garden is large or small, you can increase the amount of water available to your plants by: \n· covering the soil around them with a mulch of leaves or gras","cbCaik3efAoDn7mr","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaik3efAoDn7mr","pdf",589201,3,1,16,"English","en",105,"# Small food gardens and nutrition\n## Causes of reduced diet variety\n## How home gardens improve health\n# Designing a home garden for local needs\n## Protein-rich options\n## Calcium and iron sources\n## Vitamin A and vitamin C crops\n# Setting up and maintaining a garden project\n## Water retention and weed control\n## Growing in tubs when land is limited\n# Further information and related resources\n# Making nutritious soup with garden ingredients","[{\"question\":\"How do home gardens improve family nutrition and health?\",\"answer\":\"Home gardens increase dietary variety and provide essential nutrients like vitamins and proteins.
