Comedie:Intytuled Gammer gurtons Nedle:Played onStage, not longe ago in Christes Colledge inCambridge,'was printed by Thomas Colwell in I575,andno earlier issue is known. The author,Mr.S.Mr.of Art,was identified by Isaac Reed in I782 with John Still,aFellow of the College, who proceeded Doctor of Divinityin the year of the play's printing, was successively Masterof St.John's and of Trinity Colleges in Cambridge, anddied Bishop of Bath and Wells.Still, however, was notedfor his gravity, which won Archbishop Parker's com-mendation.Sir John Harington also,in his humorousaccount of the bishops, speaks of him as one'to whom Inever came, but I grew more religious, from whom I neverwent, but I parted better instructed';and a man whohad this effect on the irrepressible Harington could hardlyhave written Gammer Gurtons Nedle. \nIts authorship has also been attributed,on the evidenceof Martin Marprelate,to John Bridges of Pembroke Hall,Doctor of Divinity in the same year as Still, and ulti-mately Bishop of Oxford.Bridges was never a memberof Christ's College, and the chief argument for his con-nection with the play is the fact that Martin's ascriptionof it to him was not denied either by himself or by anycontemporary writer. \nThe most likely author suggested is William Stevenson, who has the right initial, was a Fellow of Christ's from \nvi \n# Introduction\n\nI55I-4 and 1559-6I,and is known from the bursar's booksto have written a play acted there in I553-4,and (whetheranother or the same play)in I559-60.Professor Gayleyhas pointed out that the reference to the king inV.ii.236is in favour of an Edwardian date for the play, and althoughColwell's title-page speaks of it as played in Christ's'notlonge ago,'this presents no difficulty if his payment of4d.,mentioned in the Stationers Register of I562-3,forlicence to print a play called Dyccon of Bedlam,be assumedto refer to Gammer Gurtons INedle under a provisionaltitle. In that case there would be a choice of two possi-bilities:either the play may have been reprinted in I575from an earlier issue,or it may have been set up intype at the time of licensing, but not issued till I575·The latter theory is strengthened by the fact that theonly issue of Colwell's press which has the same woodcutborder to the title,Thomas Ingelend's interlude of TheDisobedient Child, was printed in I560. \nIt has seemed necessary to give here only a brief sum-mary of the arguments as to authorship and date, thoughif an exhaustive, scholarly, and convincing investigationof both points be desired,it may be found in Dr.HenryBradley's introduction to the play in the first volume ofRepresentative English Comedies.1 But the possible varia-tion in date is hardly enough to have much effect uponthe play's position in literary history, and the assignmentof its authorship is not a vital matter for any reader ofto-day. The importance of Gammer Gurtons Nedle liespartly in its rank as the sole representative of the ver-nacular University comedy in England,as opposed to suchwell-known Latin pieces as Pedantius or Ignoramus, \n1 A very strong case against Still's authorship was made out inthe nineteenth volume of Anglia(May 1897),by Mr.C.H.Ross,who'thought the play was written by Bridges.Stevenson wasfirst suggested by Dr.Bradley, who may fairly be held to haveproved his case. \nIntroduction \nvii \nand partly in its freedom from those foreign elements—pedantry of 1anguage,classical mythology, and all th","cbCaispqGvZCLd3l","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaispqGvZCLd3l","pdf",3562286,102,"English","# Introduction\n## Authorship and identification\n## Date and licensing evidence\n## Literary importance and style","[{\"question\":\"When was Gammer Gurtons Nedle printed and by whom?\",\"answer\":\"It was printed by Thomas Colwell in 1575, and no earlier issue is known based on the introduction’s account.\"},{\"question\":\"Who are the proposed authors, and how is the evidence presented?\",\"answer\":\"The introduction discusses an attribution tied to Isaac Reed’s identification of Mr.S.Mr.of Art with John Still, then considers Martin Marprelate’s attribution and later scholarly suggestions such as William Stevenson, along with arguments about denials or lack thereof.\"},{\"question\":\"What arguments are used to discuss the play’s date?\",\"answer\":\"The introduction cites clues such as references in the dialogue (e.g., the king) and payment or licensing entries in stationers records, proposing an Edwardian date and possible reprint or re-setting in type under a provisional title.\"}]","Gammer Gurtons Nedle - Introduction | PDF",1791870119,157]
