All she has is a photograph of an individual named Alina Seo, and the words “Remember our promise.” \nAs Elster progresses through Sierpinski she finds most of its former denizen dead or transformed into hideous monsters. The few survivors are wrapped up in their own problems, although some help or hinder Elster’s progress. As she travels through the facility, Elster begins to remember her past: she was the android technician onboard an exploratory two-person vessel named the Penrose-512. She escapes the facility, finds the Penrose on the snowy surface, but dies before she can reach it. \nThe story begins again, with Elster again progressing through the facility. It has decayed even further since the last time she navigated it, and great parts of the metal facility have been replaced with pulsating flesh. After navigating the facility again, she finds herself transported to another place: Rotfront. Here she discovers who was the other \ncrewmember on the Penrose: the pilot, Ariane Yeong, who grew up on this planet. The picture Elster carries transforms from Alina to Ariane, the former being only areconstruction of an incomplete memory. Alina’s brown hair changes to Ariane’s white, an incredibly important color in the lore of the game due to the white-haired Grand Empress. A mysterious power exists in the universe of the game: bioresonance, which \nInformation Classification: General \nallows its users to reshape reality. The Grand Empress was the most powerful user ever of it, and she created the initial androids, called replikas. \nAriane’s hair signifies her own immense bioresonance power and the rest ofthe story is remembered by Elster as she fights through the corrupted version of Rotfront. Given the choice between receiving a job at the Sierpinski facility, or travelling on the Penrose, Ariane chose the latter. Although forbidden from interaction with her replika unit, Elster, she played music and movies for her, and the two grew close. What is also revealed is that Penrose mission, although not told to the crew, was a suicide mission: the reactor powering the ship would inevitably decay. On the real Penrose, Elster had placed Ariane into a cryopod before herself dying. Inside the cryopod, Ariane dreams all the events of the game as she dies. \nInside Ariane’s dream, Elster finally reaches the Penrose and enters. She finds the sleeping Ariane, and one of four endings happen, depending on the player’s actions during the game. \nCharacters \nA survival horror game to its core, Signalis nonetheless has a rich central cast of characters, their stories told through interactions, letters, pictures, and memories. \n• Elster (LSTR-512)– The player-controlled character, and the deuteragonist. Abiomechanical humanoid, her mind is patterned after that of a former soldier, and she exemplifies these traits. She is dedicated, focused, and always combat ready. Despite this, and the nature of the society she inhabits, she develops a kind nature through her interactions with Ariane. Even in the decayed factory, she is willing to talk and assist any survivors she finds. This hinders her in some ways, particularly in her interactions with Adler, who initially appears as friendly and then easily pushes the unsuspecting Elster down an elevator shaft in their first meeting.
