to writing the first edition of this monograph,we were surprised at how manytexts on respiratory therapy made little or no mention of the microbiologic aspectsof this area of the health sciences. This struck us because a great deal had alreadyappeared in the medical literature on the dangers of poorly maintained and man-aged equipment in respiratory therapy, particularly nebulizers, respirators, misttherapy units, and resuscitators. This new edition is intended to bridge a gap in thefield of respiratory therapy texts,to fill in an area neglected till now. \nThe writing and publication of this second edition represents a continued effortto create an awareness of the nature and extent to which nosocomial infections areassociated with respiratory therapy.Further, this monograph offers specific sug-gestions and guidelines for the care and management of respiratory therapyequipment. \nThis edition supersedes the first edition and includes updated and expanded in-formation.Two entirely new chapters have been added—one on the care and man-agement of airways in acute respiratory failure and another on epidemiologic ex-periences and bacteriologic surveys. An extensive bibliography and referencessection is provided for those who would find such information of additional value intheir work or studies. Also, additions, amplifications, and modifications have beenmade in the chapters on procedures for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilizationand guidelines on methods of microbial control. \nIn conclusion,we wish to acknowledge the critiques and suggestions of the fol-lowing individuals, but we assume sole responsibility for the final contents and for-mat of the monograph. \nGeorgia State University \nDean John Rhodes Haverty,M.D.School of Allied Health Introduction to the First Edition\n\nThis treatise presents both fundamental and applied information on nosocomial in-fections with particular emphasis on hospital-acquired infections associated withuse of respiratory therapy equipment.Although there is much information on thissubject throughout the scientific literature, our basic objective here is to provide aworking reference tool for medical and paramedical personnel throughout the hos-pital.A self-evaluation section is also included to test the reader's
