A variety of instruments and materials (Refer Fig. 1.1) are needed to record information on the drawing sheet. These are the necessary tools for laying down lines on a drawing in an accurate manner. It is essential to learn the correct technique of handling the instruments in order to promote economy and produce clean and readable drawings. For a work of professional grade, a set of superior instruments is a boon. Generally a beginner is tempted to purchase cheap instruments for learning, whereas poor ones will be an annoyance from the start and worthless after a short use. Good instruments will last a lifetime with reasonable care. Therefore, in selecting instruments and materials for drawing, one has to select the best. Since poor instruments can be difficult to distinguish from good ones, it is preferable to seek trustworthy advice before beginning. The student should mark all instruments and materials plainly with initials as soon as they are purchased. \n1.1.1 (a) BIS Codes \nIndian Standards Institution (ISI) was in existence for framing the standards for products. Later in April 1987, Government of India formed a body of National Standards. This body for standardization is named us Bureau of Indian Standards - 'BIS' . The main objective of BIS is to foster the commercial and industrial growth of the country. BIS develops globally acceptable standard for various products. BIS involves in coordination with similar standards developing organizations, throughout the world, especially with International Standard Organization (ISO) . BIS has implemented various standards especially for technical drawings. The students are strongly advised to adopt these recommended standards in practice. For our discussion in engineering graphics we will be following Indian Standards. \nIS 3221 : 1966 SETS FOR DRAWING INSTRUMENTS \nIS 10713 : 1983 SCALES \nIS 10714 : 1983 SECTIONS AND OTHER \nCONVENTIONS \nIS 11669 : 1986 GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF \nDIMENSIONING ON TECHNICAL DRAWINGS \nIS 9609 : 2001 LETTERING \nIS 10714 : 2001 LINES \nIS 15021 : 2001 PROJECTION METHODS \n1.1.1 (b) Drawing Instruments \nThe uses, directions for use, precautions for keeping them in proper working order and specifications are presented in Fig. 1.1. \n\n| S .
