It was developed, trialled, and subsequently peer reviewed by academics who participated in the OECD project on Fostering and Assessing Creativity and Critical Thinking in Higher Education . As an annotated syllabus, it is intended primarily as a professional learning tool for academic staff rather than a document to be shared with students. \nPossible uses of this document \n• To prompt reflection on different ways of embedding creativity and critical thinking into individual sessions or full courses. \n• To use as an example for discussion or to further develop in professional learning workshops for academic staff (blue boxes highlight examples of teaching practices) \n• To adapt sections as needed and try them out in own teaching. \nReflection questions: \n• How do listed learning outcomes for subject knowledge and creativity / critical thinking support one other? \n• How is the learning structured and guided? What steps could academic staff take to increase student autonomy overtime? \n• How could the material here be adapted for use in different contexts, and for students and academic staff with different experiences of creativity and critical thinking? \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION \nFundamentals of Drawing invites students to explore the expressive and conceptual power of drawing as a foundational tool in digital arts. Through ablend of analogue and digital practices, the course develops creativity, critical thinking, and technical fluency. Students will engage with provocative questions, such as “Are computers to design what microwaves are to the kitchen?” to challenge assumptions about technology, process, and artistic intention. The course covers essential topics including color theory and its constructive role, expressive life drawing, and the representation of light, space, and proportion. Students will study the work of influential figures like Milton Glaser and Joseph Beuys, and analyse movement through the lens of William Kentridge’s Drawings for Projection. These explorations culminate in students creating their own animations using drawing techniques, bridging traditional methods with contemporary digital workflows. By the end of the course, students will have developed a personal perspective on the relevance of analogue drawing in a digital context, supported by hands-on projects, peer collaboration, and reflective writing. This course is about mastering technique but it is also about discovering how drawing can shape ideas, narratives, and the future of digital creation. \nDegree/study programme \nDigital Arts degree \nProgramme year \n1st year, 1st semester \nTypical class size \n15 students \nPrerequisites \nNo prerequisites \n[Example Course] Fundamentals of Drawing \nCourse learning outcomes \nTo complete the course successfully, students must carry out 5 visual arts activities where they will have to demonstrate an adequate use of both technical skills, critical and creative thinking. To critically evaluate and creatively develop their products, they must provide visual and textual evidence of their process including sketches, auxiliary photographs, and references. \n6 phases of each process will be evaluated: \n-Idea or purpose \n-Formal innovation \n-Style/References/Genre \n-Structure \n-Skill \n-Surface \nCreativity will be evaluated using the following dimensions: \n-Originality and Novelty \n-Flexibility and Adaptation \n-Elaboration and Justification \n-Risk-taking \n-Imagination \n-Synthesis \nCritical thinking will be evaluated using the following dimensions: \n-Observing and describing \n-Questioning and investigating \n-Comparing and connecting \n-Look for complexity \n-Exploring multiple viewpoints \n-Reasoning and evidence \nMode of delivery and workload allocation \n- In class (in-person): a","cbCaifLk7grZ8wRV","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifLk7grZ8wRV","pdf",266893,15,"English","# Possible uses of this document\n# Reflection questions\n# Course description\n# Degree/study programme\n# Course learning outcomes\n# 6 phases of each process\n# Mode of delivery and workload allocation\n# Assessment\n# Prescribed texts/materials","[{\"question\":\"What is the main purpose of the Fundamentals of Drawing course?\",\"answer\":\"It develops students’ creativity, critical thinking, and technical fluency by using drawing as a foundational tool in digital arts through both analogue and digital practices.\"},{\"question\":\"How are students assessed in this course?\",\"answer\":\"Students complete five visual arts activities, assessed through six evaluated phases.
