Let’shave a look at a typical Level 1 question: \nLewis is building a brick wall. \nThe wall will need 19 bags of cement. \nEach bag of cement costs £7.83. Use estimation to work out how much Lewis will need to pay for the cement. \nYou must show your working. \n(3) \nThere are three ways you can approach this question but only one will lead to marks: \n1. Work out the answer in full: this takes a lot of time (estimation is usually non calculator), is easy to get wrong and will not lead to marks \n2. Work out the answer in full and then estimate the answer: this takes a lot of time, is easy to get wrong and can give you the wrong answer \n3. Use estimation to find the answer: easier than the other two options and will lead toa valid answer \nLook at the example question. \n• Using estimation 19 bags at £7.83 each would be 20x8 = £160. \n• Using the real numbers and then estimating is 19 x7.83 = £148.77, with £150 as the answer. \nWe would only accept £160 as the correct answer. \nTOP TIPS \n• When you estimate, you need to round the numbers first \n• Rounding the numbers makes the calculations easier to do \n• Round the numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 \nWorked Example: \nA shop sells T-shirts at £36 each and scarves at £21 each. Melinda buys 12 T-shirts and 12 scarves. \nUse estimation to work out how much Melinda will need to pay. \n(3) \nUsing estimation, a T-shirt costs £40 and a scarf costs £20. \nCost = 12 x (36 + 21) \n= 12 x (40 + 20) \n= 10 x 60 \n= 600 \nThe cost is approximately £600 \nLet’s Practice \n1. Aquil earns £288 per week. He needs to work out his annual salary. Use estimation to work out his annual salary. \n2. Trudi earns £1628 per month. She needs to work out her annual salary. Use estimation to work out her annual salary. \n3. Peter sold 89 pairs of scissors for £24 each. They cost him £11. Use estimation to work out how much profit he made. You must show your working out. \n4. A coin weighs 12g. Ria has a bag of 167 coins. Use estimation to work out how much the bag of coins weighs. \n5. A coin weighs 12g. Sam has a bag of coins that weighs 983g. Use estimation to workout how many coins he has. \nExam Style Questions \n1. \nA wall has an area of 123m2 \nA tin of paint will cover 14m2 of wall. \nHattie needs to work out how many tins of paint she will need to buy. \nUse estimation to work out how many tins she needs. \n(3) \n2. \nShanika sold 378 handbags for £58 each. \nShe paid £32 each for them. \nUse estimation to work out how much profit she made. \nYou must show your working out. \n(3) \n3. \nA farmer bought 3179kg of seeds at a cost of £17 per kilogram. \nUse estimation to work out the total cost of the seeds. \n(3) \n4. \nA machine operator makes 74 bolts every hour. \nShe works 39 hours per week for 48 weeks of the year. \nShe will get a bonus if she makes more than 130,000 bolts in a year. \nUse estimation to work out if she will receive a bonus this year. You must show your working out. \n(3) \n5. \nAaron is building a brick wall. \nThe wall will need 1025 bricks. \nThe weight of each brick is 2.89kg. \nAaron will pay a delivery charge if the total of bricks is over 2500kg. \nUse estimation to work out if you think Aaron will need to pay the delivery charge. You must show your working out. \n(3) \nAnswers \nLet’s Practice \nYou might work out your estimates differently, but make sure they are sensible. \n1. 300 x 50 = £15,000 \n2. 1600 x 10 = £16,000 \n3. Profit on 1 pair is 20 – 10 = £10 Overall profit is 10 x 90 = £900 \n4. 10 x 170 = 1700kg \n5. 1000 divided by 10 = 100 coins \nExam Style Questions \n1. 120 divided by 10 = 12 Hattie will need 12 tins. \n2. 60 – 30 = £30 \n30 x 400 = £1200 \nShanika will make £1200 profit. \n3. 3200 x 20 = £64,000 \n4. 70 x 40 = 2800 2800 x 50 = 140,000 \nShe will receive a bonus. \n5. 1000 x 3 = 3000kg \nAaron will","cbCais6fvMdgt5GO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCais6fvMdgt5GO","pdf",138415,"English","# Typical Level 1 Estimation Question\n## Approaches to the Question\n## Example Question\n## Top Tips for Estimation\n# Worked Example\n# Let’s Practice\n# Exam Style Questions\n# Answers","[{\"question\":\"Why is estimation preferred over calculating the full answer first?\",\"answer\":\"Estimation is easier and faster than full calculation without a calculator, and it is the approach that leads to a valid answer and marks when used correctly.\"},{\"question\":\"What should you do first when using estimation?\",\"answer\":\"Round the numbers first, typically to the nearest 10 or 100, to make the calculations simpler.\"},{\"question\":\"How are answers judged in the cement example?\",\"answer\":\"The guide states that only the properly estimated value is accepted as correct (for the example, £160 rather than £148.77 rounded).\"}]","Functional Skills Mathematics - Level 1 - Estimation | PDF",1792464184,13]
