Growing up in Kane'ohe and ‘Aiea, Hawaii he learned Hawaiian music through his family and close relatives playing at parties, gatherings, and his family’s infamous ‘Halawa Jam’ Christmas Eve Pa’ina. Asa started first with the ‘ukulele and then pursing the guitar through learning the old-style Ki Hō’alu (slack key) . Asa’s musical influences were Gabby Pahinui, Atta Issacs, Uncle Eddie Kamae and the Son’s of Hawai’i, the Sunday Manoa, Peter Moon, Robert & Roland Cazimero, Herb Ohta Sr. (Ohta-san), Aunty Genoa Keawe, and Aunty Alice Namakelua. At the age of 14 Asa was privileged to dance hula with the Men of Waimapuna and later with Hālau Hula ‘O Kukunaokala. Through dancing the hula, learning his Hawaiian culture, and playing music has afforded Asa the opportunity to perform with many of Hawai’i’s well-known entertainers. \nIn 1979 Asa, Bryan Tolentino, Del Beazley and Chris Kamaka formed the group Side Order Band. Asa continues his association with the band and was privilege to record with both Bryan and Del on their solo projects. Working with Chris Kamaka and Kamaka ‘Ukulele, Asa travels to `ukulele expos, festivals, and shows…working, performing, and conducting workshops. In 1982, Asa worked as a member of a trio for American Hawai'i Cruises where he performed on both the SS Constitution and the SS Independence cruise ships. It was there that Asa met his future wife Laura Dean. \nBecause of job transfers for both Asa and his wife Laura, they have lived in New York, Texas, Utah, and now they currently reside in Charlotte, North Carolina. Throughout his career and travels, Asa’s musical ventures have taken him around the country and to many different lands. He loves the opportunity to give back and does so through teaching lessons and workshops for both guitar and ‘ukulele. When possible, Asa performs with his friends and any musicians that loves to play music…and he continues on his musical journey making sure to“never stop learning.” \nH O K UZ UTT E R M E IST E R \n' UKULELE & GUITAR \nHOKUZ UTTER MEISTER . COM \nBIO \nHōkū Zuttermeister was born and raised in Kāne’ohe, Hawai’i, to parents Carl and Susan Zuttermeister. At a very young age, Hōkū learned to dance Hula from his great-grandmother Kau’i Zuttermeister and his father and mother. At the age of 6 he taught himself how to play the ‘ukulele by ear. The music of Linda Dela Cruz, Genoa Keawe, Kekua Fernandez, The Brothers Cazimero and many other Hawaiian artists was a huge influence in his early life. \nIn Intermediate School he met Wade Okuda who taught him the basics of guitar and Kī ho ‘alu. There he would perform at many care homes and community events with the Hālau that he belonged to, Hālau Hula O Ka ‘Ua Kilihune. \nIn 1991 he helped start the Polynesian Music program at J. B. Castle High School. He continued to do many performances for the kūpuna and the community. In 1992 he met Ioane Burns, Marcus Ontai, and Kekao Kaluhiwa, and formed the group Kāna’e. They realized, at the time, that they were the only young group of musicians performing the nahenahe style of Hawaiian music. \nAfter high school, Hōkū continued his growth as a musician by performing and recording with such Hawaiian music greats as Ku‘uipo Kumukahi, Jerry Santos, Sean Na‘auao, Raiatea Helm, Nā Palapalai, Mahela Ichinose, Ho‘okena and Side Order Band. \nIn 2007, Hōkū released his highly-anticipated debut album ‘Āina Kūpuna, which at the 2008 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards won 6 awards including Hawaiian Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Hawaiian Language Performance, Most Promising New Artist and Liner Notes. \nFollowing a 9 year stretch of traveling and performing around the world, Hōkū stepped back into the studio to record his anticipated second album Ku’u Pua Sakura.
