The issue frames AI as both an ingenuity milestone and a potential menace, covering weaponised targeting, deepfakes, intrusive surveillance, and cyber scams. Alongside caution, the editorial highlights AI’s creative power—generated prompts transforming words, images, inventions, and recipes—while emphasizing the role of human imagination in pushing, and in guiding, this uncertain ascent.","JULY 15, 2026 􀀁 LEADING THE DEBATE SINCE 1984 􀀁 WWW. Its army hasan AI-powered targeting system called Habsora that identi􀂁es and generates attacks on up to \n100 targets a day, which often include homes, women, children. There is also an automated system that tracks targets when they enter their homes, then triggers strikes so that entire families are hit. \nBesides such weaponising applications, AI also generates deepfakes for pornography, political blackmail, social unrest, cyber scams, and worse. Then there are highly intrusive surveillance systems (such as the notorious Pegasus), used by government and private entities, that go far beyond security and crime prevention. \nOn the other hand, AI is the almost god we now worship because of the invisible, intangible ways in which it allows words and images, books and music, \nmachinery and inventions, recipes \nand blueprints, all things once painstakingly man-made, to apparate in front of our disbelieving eyes with the wave of a prompt. \nThere is no \ndoubt there is something magical about AI. As it vaults over more complex \nhurdles of human achievement each day, it is reaching heights that leave us ordinary creatures airless and dizzy. Yet, it is the human mind that powers AI. It is human creativity and endeavour, human imagination and ambition that gave birth to AI and that relentlessly push it up the ladder of evolution. \nA s we make it more \nadvanced, more like us, as \ngood as us and as evil as us, we are also afraid. Because this technological leap has gone beyond code and mechanics into the realm of the unknown, into aspects of sentience and thought that we did not think we would ever get to meddle with. And yet, here we are. At the cusp of a new kind of world, anew order of being, one that is so unprecedented we are not able to fully grasp it yet. When we look back, we may well think of 2026 asthe year we fully accepted that a protean force now sits beside us in our homes, beds, and o􀂍ce chairs. \nIt seemed rather apposite, therefore, to dedicate this Special Issue of Frontline to AI, to understanding, thinking, and theorising about it, admiring but also cautious, hopeful but also anxious. Our Consulting Editor (Digital) Brinda Vasudevan put it together with a set of absolutely fantastic writers and one talented young designer-cartoonist. \n6 \nLEADING THE DEBATE SINCE 1984 Editor
