In our work with preservice teachers, appraising the impact of teaching emerged as the most conceptually and practically challenging practice. To \nunderstand how preservice teachers interpreted and enacted appraisal, this exploratory case study analysed 15 GTPA submissions that met standards in the first four practices but not in appraisal. The findings highlight common issues, including conflating appraisal with general reflection, difficulty interpreting and applying data \nmeaningfully, and presenting narrative accounts rather than \nevaluative analysis. These misunderstandings stemmed from \ndiscourse-related challenges, as commonly applied meanings of‘appraisal’ and ‘narrative’ diverged from the GTPA’s intended use. \nThis study suggests the need for teacher educators to emphasise \nlanguage precision, provide exemplars, and scaffold assessment literacy to support a deeper understanding ofpreservice teachers’impact on student outcomes. \nKeywords: Appraising Practice, Appraisal, Initial Teacher Education (ITE), Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA), Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA) \nIntroduction \nTeaching quality has become a key policy focus in Australia, with increased scrutiny on how preservice teachers are assessed and deemed ready to graduate. Evaluating teacher performance in initial teacher education (ITE) programs is aligned closely to the preservice teachers’ ability to enhance student learning outcomes (Darling-Hammond et al., 2013) . While the connection between teaching and student learning might seem straightforward, understanding this relationship is complex and requires a commitment to deeply understanding how one’s teaching impacts student learning (Arends & Kilcher, 2010) . \nIn recent years, Teacher Performance Assessments (TPAs) have been mandated by \nthe Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) for Australian ITE programs (AITSL, 2017). TPAs involve a standardised assessment of preservice teachers’teaching practices focusing on their ability to successfully implement a full teaching cycle. \nIntroduced as part of national education reforms, TPAs are administered in the final year of ITE programs to provide evidence of preservice teachers’ competence (Brett & Parks, 2022). The broader goal ofTPAs is to ensure that preservice teachers are well-prepared for the demands ofthe profession and are ‘classroom ready’(Heck, 2022) . \nAustralian ITE providers use a variety ofTPAs.
