\nFeeding:Gray whales eat the tiny animalsthat live near the bottom of the ocean.Thewhales suck sand into their mouths. Then, withtheir tongue, they push the sand out of the sidesof their mouths and through the baleen.Theanimals get trapped in the baleen. \n# GRAY WHALE\n\n35-50 feet long \nThe gray whale is long and narrow. This shape helpsthe whale move through the water faster. \nA gray whale doesn't have teeth.Instead,it has platesof baleen. The baleen works like a comb to trap thewhale's food. \nThe salty water in the lagoons helps the calves float. \nCalves:Female gray whales have one calfevery two years. The calves nurse for seven \nmonths.They can drink about 50 gallons of milkeach day. This helps them build up blubber, orfat. They need the blubber for the cold watersaround Alaska.Blubber helps keep the whaleswarm. \nCalves stay with their mothers in the lagoonsfor up to three months.During this time, theirmothers teach them to swim. The calves will \nneed to be strong swimmers when they return tothe open sea. \nMigration:Like many animals,California graywhales travel,or migrate, from one place to \nanother.In fact,California gray whales make oneof the longest of all animal migrations. \nThe whales spend the summer feeding nearAlaska. In the fall, they swim south to the warmlagoons near Baja California and spend thewinter there. In early spring, the whales travelback north. Each trip takes two to three months. The whales travel about 14,000 miles on eachround trip!
