In this small-scale study, a survey was \nused to gather insights from preservice teachers at one university about their experiences of working as teachers while simultaneously completing their teaching degrees. The preservice teacher participants enthusiastically shared their thoughts on the benefits and challenges of combining teaching with studying. A thematic analysis of the data revealed five overarching benefits and six overarching \nchallenges perceived by these preservice educators. We argue that \nfurther large-scale research is needed to ensure that the voices of \npreservice teachers are included in discussions about the teacher \nshortage in these precarious times. \nKeywords: initial teacher education, teacher shortage, preservice educators, benefits to studying and teaching, challenges to teaching and studying. \nIntroduction \nAs early as the 1980s there were predictions of a shortfall of teachers in Australia in the decades to come (Richardson, & Watt, 2006) . In recent years, the teacher shortage has hit unprecedented numbers and the demands placed on educators during the COVID-19 pandemic added to staffing challenges facing the teaching profession. The scale of the teacher shortage is now significant, with predictions that New South Wales (NSW), for example, does simply not have anywhere near enough teachers to meet demand (Wilson & Carabetta, 2022) . Reports from the NSW Education Department, accessed by the NSW Teachers Federation, showed that in 2021 there were more than 1,100 unfilled full-time secondary and special education teaching positions, with this number expected to increase in the coming years (Baker, 2021) . The Federal Minister for Education, Jason Clare, stated that modelling by his department demonstrated there will be a high school teacher shortfall of about 4,000 by 2025 (Longmuir, et al, 2022) . \nVarious stakeholders, including state and territory education department heads, schools, universities, and union leaders, developed, and implemented a range of measures to address the shortfall (Longmuir, et al., 2022) . One strategy was to allow students currently enrolled in teaching degrees to work as conditionally accredited teachers to fill some of these \nteaching gaps. The NSW Premier at the time Dominic Perrottet encouraged preservice educators (PSTs) to provide a “buffer” to support staff shortages (Rose & McGowan, 2022) and therefore, in 2022, the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) approved preservice education students for conditional accreditation if t","cbCaipmltipylaIj","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipmltipylaIj","pdf",356834,"English","# Introduction\n## Policy context and teacher-shortage measures\n## Conditional accreditation for preservice teachers\n## Study rationale and concept of “voice\"","[{\"question\":\"What problem does the article address?\",\"answer\":\"The article addresses the significant teacher shortage in Australia and the staffing challenges intensified by COVID-19.\"},{\"question\":\"How were preservice teachers’ experiences examined?\",\"answer\":\"A small-scale survey collected insights from preservice teachers at one university about working as teachers while simultaneously completing their teaching degrees.\"},{\"question\":\"What did the thematic analysis identify?\",\"answer\":\"The analysis revealed five overarching benefits and six overarching challenges perceived by preservice educators when combining teaching with studying.\"}]","Friend or Foe - Preservice Teachers’ Experience of Teaching While Studying | PDF",1792078832,48]
