Glaring sunlight streamed in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, turning the tinted glass into burning rectangles. Dr. Alexandra Lennox stood at the head of the oval conference table, watching as the last of the participants arrived. Four years had passed since the message from Europa, four years in which the world had changed fundamentally. In many ways for the better, as she had hoped, but in many ways, not.  \nFour years earlier, the alien message had ultimately manifested on Earth, not as radio waves or light signals, but as a massive disturbance in the planet’s natural Schumann resonances. Those extremely low-frequency (ELF) electromagnetic waves, trapped between the surface and the ionosphere, had suddenly carried alien information directly into human minds. Only under the influence of psilocybin had most people been able to perceive it clearly.  \nWhat followed was both salvation and chaos. Millions were saved from despair, madness, and suicide. But gradually, and then with ever greater acceleration, the alien’s profound message began to birth cults, conspiracy theories, and dangerous misinterpretations.  \nOne of two reasons SCION now existed.  \nSCION had been created under the United Nations to do two things: protect humanity from the worst excesses of its own credulity, and watch for any sign of genuine second contact. Given that the first contact had come through ELF frequencies, SCION’s analysts now routinely monitored global Schumann resonance data, local ELF anomalies, and the electromagnetic emissions of fringe groups. Homemade ELF transmitters, synchronized group meditations, unusual EEG patterns—anything that might indicate someone was accidentally (or deliberately) tuning into the same channel the aliens had used.  \nBut lead after lead went nowhere. The alien had almost certainly ceased trying to communicate for good, and these groups were simply projecting their hopes, fears, or delusions onto the original poetic message.
