Hestudied at Eodz University for the period 1945-50 and then atWarsaw University,where he took his D.Phil.in 1953.At Warsawhe was made Assistant Professor and then,in 1959,Chairmanand,in 1964,Professor of the Section of the History of Philosophy.For a number of years during the same period he worked in theInstitute of Philosophy of the Polish Academy of Sciences.He wasalso sometime editor-in-chief of the main philosophical journal inPoland and other journals.Having been expelled from his uni-versity post by the Polish government in March 1968 for politicalreasons,he became Visiting Professor in the Department of Philo-sophy at McGill University,Montreal,for the period 1968-9,andthen,during 1969-70,in the Department of Philosophy at theUniversity of California,Berkeley.In 1975 he served as VisitingProfessor in the Department of Philosophy at Yale University.From 1981 to 1994 he was Professor on the Committee of SocialThought at the University of Chicago.He was a Senior ResearchFellow of All Souls College Oxford from 1970 until his retirementin 1995.  \nLeszek Kołakowski is the author of over thirty books.Thosewritten in or translated into English include Main Current ofMarxism(3 vols.1978);Religion(1982);Bergson(1984);Husserland the Search for Certitude(1976);Metaphysical Horror(1988),Presence of Myth(1989);Modernity on Endless
