Just another frosty night in a concrete box packed with men who’d burned their chances at redemption. But the tremor in his fingers betrayed him. So did the weight of the phone still burning in his pocket.  \nHe sat alone in the main security booth, two floors above what had become the solitary wing. The dull white hum of old monitors filled the space. It was a noise that faded into the background. But tonight, it pressed in on him like static in his skull. The camera feeds played across the bank of screens, flickering with the same mindless rhythm they always did. One feed in particular, though, would soon be killed.  \nThe voice had told him it needed to be down for twenty minutes. For what purpose, he didn’t want to know. He simply had to do his part.  \nThe call had only lasted a minute. A calm, robotic voice, most certainly modulated, had told him everything. It rattled off his wife’s name, his son’s school, what his boy had packed in his lunch that morning. It knew it all. The speaker listed the finer details of his life without emotion. Then it gave him a choice: disable the system and unlock access to the solitary block. Or live long enough to see the ones he loved pay the price.  \nHe’d tried to tell himself it was all a bluff. But the photos they’d sent said differently. They’d taken stills of his wife in the checkout line at the grocery store and his son laughing on the swings during recess at school.
