Galerie im Lenbachhausis putting on the most comprehensive exhibition to date of the work of this out-standing,charismatic Blaue Reiter artist and important representative of GermanExpressionism. In this respect, the present retrospective even surpasses the legend-ary memorial exhibition held in Munich in 1916 and,at the same time, followson from the last Franz Marc retrospective in 1980,likewise at the Lenbachhaus.Because of the very fortunate situation with regard to loans, our exhibition bringstogether nearly one hundred paintings, constituting roughly half of Marc's sur-viving painted oeuvre, plus a wealth of outstanding works on paper. This makesit possible to gain an overview of Marc's work that is both comprehensive andtransparent. \nTransparency was also one of the key considerations in finalizing thesequence of the extensive plate section and in writing the commentaries on them, together with establishing a precise chronology and the revelation of new cor-relations.A dense weave of relationships between the works becomes apparent, for example between the paintings, sketchbook drawings and painted postcards, some of which have never been accessible before to the general public. \nThe catalogue essays set themselves the task of covering new aspects onthe subject while at the same time maintaining a suitable distance to the artist'swork, which has not been done in many previous publications on the subject, which are marked by a certain pathos of Marc veneration.Marc himself left pos-terity a wealth of art-theoretical writings, not least in his celebrated 100 Aphorismsand Letters from the Field. In these,he formulated his lofty spiritual ambitionsand his notions on the cleansing and purification of art, transcendence and meta-physics that he put into practice, particularly in his mature animal paintings.Thesefundamental writings have not only been exhaustively interpreted in the litera-ture on Marc, but also often only copiously quoted. For this reason, the commentsMarc made about his art are not the focal point of the texts in this publication. \nThe first article takes a closer look at Marc's hitherto almost unknown earlywork and his relationship with the paintings of the Rome-based German artists,","cbCaicVDVF6eAeW0","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicVDVF6eAeW0","pdf",43147571,344,"English","# FRANZ MARC THE RETROSPECTIVE\n##
