The preface explains why architectural drawing matters as the first tangible evidence of ideas and creation, enabling others to interpret, build, and realize the architect’s vision. It describes how the book divides material into distinct categories, with specific exceptions to chronological order, including a concentrated study of the Imperial Hotel and thematic grouping work into variouscategories.Nine categories were finally determined, including a separatecategory in which one building alone, the Imperial Hotel, could be studiedfrom many different aspects. \nFOR AN ARCHITECT THE ACT OF DRAWING is essentially ameans to anend:the putting down on paper of ideas in the imagination withthe goal of building a building. In this respect,an architect's drawing is notunlike a composer's notes on staff paper. Both the architect and the com-poser are faced with identical situations:to make the graphic representa-tion of creation so precise,so clear and readable, that others may interpret, understand, and bring the work to life. The contractor and his workmenmust be able to build the building as envisioned by the architect;theconductor and his musicians must be ableto produce the sound and nuanceas it was originally written by the composer. But the drawing of an architect, like the score of acomposer,is-in itself-of relatively less importance thanthe end result. It is the building that becomes the final embodiment of theidea;the drawing represents the first tangible evidence. \nWithin each division the work is presented chronologically, except in thecase of the Imperial Hotel, where all the drawings shown were done withina span of time concurrentwith the architect's presence in Japan,on and offfrom 1916 to 1922.One other exception to the chronological format is PartSeven,a section that deals with several types of projects-a sort of miscel-laneous potpourri. Here chronology has been thrown to the wind andworks are grouped by type, regardless of time.Drawings for a bridge of1915 stand nexttothoseforoneof1949;an automobile design of1920 nextto one of 1958. \nFrank Lloyd Wright lucidly recorded his ideas on paper;thereafter, theywere translated into three dimensions.By this process he produced a newarchitecture for the twentieth century. He preferred to call this new archi-tecture\"organic architecture.\"Throughout his lifetime he continually de-fined and explained this term, but perhaps never so succinctly as when hesaid,\"Any building that is organic, anywhere in time, will
