This is not true for me.For me the challenge is always the same.It is unchanging. The challenge that pushes and beckons, urges and compelsme to write is Need.It is the need that I think exists for thekind of books I try to write. \nThis Need,I believe,is that children have books writtenfor them that will help them develop an understanding of them-selves and of the resources and potentialities, the problemsand the pressures of their immediate world. It is the Needfor books to be written that will help to give children an insightand an acceptance of the larger world outside their own. \nWhen I was a child my immediate world was safe andsmall. Its boundaries were rigid and tight and strong.Theoutside world was vast, limitless, faraway and unknown.Itscarcely touched our lives. It did not give us great concern. This was true at the time of my childhood. It is not true today. \nToday,a child's immediate world is one of ever-wideningcircles,moving outward, engulfing all that, which yesterday, was unknown. The world outside has grown smaller. It hascome nearer,it now lies but a step beyond our dooryard. \nIf our children are to be a part of this new world with anymeasure of confidence and harmony they must have knowledgeof what today's world is and what it holds. They must knowthat there are other life-ways,standards and values besides \n*An address given at the MASL spring conference April 5,1963. \nthe ones that we hold dear. They must know that other peopleare apt to act and react according to the pattern of their owntradition and culture. Our children need a measuring stick oflarger dimension than the one which seemed adequate ageneration ago.Children need to know other children of othernationalities and races,so that, inheriting their adult world, there may be a free and joyous interchange of acceptance andrespect among all people. \nOne way for our children to know these things,to gatherthis knowledge is from the books that are written for them. \nThis then,is my challenge -to add my bit to the books thatI think should be written. This then is the light that beckons.I try to follow it,not changing my course, not looking towardgreener pastures, but plodding along book by book using thesmall gifts that have been given me to use. \nWhat must these books have,if they are to be true to thepattern of the people in them? \nI believe there are five qualities that such books must have. These qualities are in addition to interest, achievement andmaturity levels. They are aside from plot, suspense and style. They do not form a framework upon which to hang a story. But they are the core of its being. \nThere must be the quality of honesty in writing.A writermust believe what is written. There must be sincerety in whatis said. The picture must not be distorted. It must be as thewriter sees it. The truth must not be disclaimed.A writermust be true to the people he writes about and they in turnmust be true to themselves. \nThe writer must not be tempted to mold the characters ina story to a pattern of popular conception,to what he thinks hisreaders want or to what he thinks they believe should happen. The writer's task is to create","cbCaivxpdD3QsOnA","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivxpdD3QsOnA","pdf",1045156,32,"English","# A Writer's Challenge\n## Children’s need for broader understanding\n## Core qualities of truthful children’s books","[{\"question\":\"What does the author identify as the writer’s main challenge?\",\"answer\":\"The author describes the challenge as “Need”—the need for books that help children understand themselves and the wider world.\"},{\"question\":\"Why does the author say children require knowledge of today’s world?\",\"answer\":\"Because a child’s immediate world is no longer small and static; it is expanding, making other life-ways, values, and cultures necessary for confidence and harmony.\"},{\"question\":\"What qualities must books have to be true to the people they portray?\",\"answer\":\"The author lists five qualities and highlights honesty in writing, sincerity in what is said, and creating characters that are realistic and true to themselves rather than shaped to fit popular expectations.\"}]","FORWARD - A Writer's Challenge | PDF",1789966896,49]
