Govemor George W.Bush duringthe long months of the 2000 presidential campaign.Everysingle one of those joumalists heard Bush make one stu-pid remark after another, day after day: \n\"I know how hard it is for you to put food on yourfamily.” \n“Families is where our nation finds hope, wherewings take dream.” \n“They want the federal govemment controlling SocialSecurity like it's some kind of federal program.” \nYet it was Weisberg alone who understood the com-mercial potential for collecting these idiotic remarks in theform of a small trade paperback book, the kind that couldbe kept by the toilet, and picked up now and then for afew moments of distraction and some surefire laughs. \nThis is the third in the series.Fortunately, for Weisberg, the president continues to have problems either forming \nideas in his head or expressing those ideas when he openshis mouth. And so the Bushisms series has become quite thegravy train for Weisberg,a dream come true for any politicalwriter, because it actually involves no writing. \nIn fact,it seems,I am the only one doing any writingfor this book at all.And yet, when Weisberg puts togetherhis curriculum vitae,it will include three internationalbestsellers.Yes,these books are popular not only in theUnited States—and in places like Germany,France, andItaly, where Bush is considered an out-of-control cow-boy—but also in countries that made up the Coalition ofthe Willing against Iraq.Countries like England,Poland,Tonga, and the Solomon Islands. \nAnd,as an American, that worries me to some extent. It is one thing to have the rest of the world believe that ourpresident cannot be trusted. It is quite another for them tothink he is stupid. \nBecause he is not.It has taken me some time to cometo this point of view. You see, facility with language is onlyone aspect of intelligence.Bush,as I have come to appre-ciate,is a shrewd,if dishonest, politician who surroundshimself with like-minded advisers. \n“Compassionate Conservatism.”\"By far a vast major-ity of my tax cuts go to those at the bottom.”“No ChildLeft Behind”—the most ironically named piece of legisla-tion since the 1942\"Japanese Family Leave Act.\"All thesein their way are as funny as any of the malapropisms inthis volume. \nAnd there may even be some method to Bush's seem-ing stupidity.Take, for example, when he told us duringthe 2000 campaign that he doesn’t mind being \"misun-derestimated.\"Sure,this sounded crazily dumb.Butmaybe in his own way he was outsmarting us all.Maybeby\"misunderestimated,\"he meant that he doesn't mindbeing underestimated for the wrong reason. It was okay thatwe thought he was stupid.Hell, that lowered expectationsfor the debates. What we were really underestimating washis capacity to fool us. \nTake another example.\"Subliminable.\"Rememberhow during the campaign he said “subliminable”fourtimes after being asked whether a Republican ad had usedthe word “rats”subliminally?Maybe by saying \"sublim-inable”so many times,Bush was himself using a subtlesubliminal technique to give people the ","cbCaiel0rQvrvhsx","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiel0rQvrvhsx","pdf",4035605,100,"English","#
