FOREIGN ELEMENTS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGEVOCABULARY\n\nKAMISAH ARIFFIN \nUniversiti Teknologi MARACawangan Pahang,Kampus Jengka26400 BANDAR JENGKA,Pahang \n# ABSTRACT\n\nWith the United Kingdom and the United States of Americaas the giants of the world economic power, the importanceof English, which is the first language of these countries, isnaturally and undeniably great.Claimed as having morethan 500,000 in word power,no other languages in theworld has been its equal though some like French andSpanish have attempted to compete against it.What makesEnglish acceptable worldwide is its vocabulary. The mixedcharacter of its vocabulary through adoption, assimilationand incorporation from other languages enables it to be'shared'by the speakers of the languages it borrows, andthus, makes it some kind of familiar to those speakers. \n# INTRODUCTION\n\nThe English Language, which did not even exist 2,000 years ago,is now usedby at least 750 million people all over the world.Statistically, half of this figurespeaks this language as a mother tongue. This claim is further enhanced byMcRum et al (1992)that the English Language “has become the language ofthe planet, the first truly global language”as“...nearly half of all businessdeals in Europe are conducted in English\"and“...is the official voice of theair,of the sea,and of Christianity...\"(p10).. \nOne of the most prominent aspects that makes English has the ‘global sway’unlike its other rivals like French,Spanish and German,is its rich, mixed andcolourful vocabulary. The Oxford English Dictionary lists about 500,000words,which is about five times more than the amount of German and French, \nwhich are its closest rivals. One of the reasons for this large vocabulary is dueto the English Language tendency to go outside her own linguistic resourcesand borrow from other languages. As observed by Emerson (in McRum et al,1992,p1),“...the English Language is the sea which receives tributaries fromevery region under heaven.\"These tributaries do not only bring great wealth tothe English vocabulary, its capacity of assimilating those outside elements hasbecome one of its greatest asset to attain international use. \nA study of new vocabulary over the fifty years period(1941-1991)by Algeo,1991 finds that borrowed words from other languages that are known asloanwords, make up two percent of the English vocabulary.Another study offmore than a thousand loanwords by Cannon(1987),specifically draws thepercentage of the words origin as the following: \n\n| LOANWORDS ORIGIN | PERCENTAGE |\n| --- | --- |\n| French | 25 |\n| Japanese | 8 |\n| Spanish | 8 |\n| Italian | 7 |\n| Latin | 7 |\n| African | 6 |\n| German | 6 |\n| (reek | 6 |\n| Russian and Yiddish | 4 |\n| Others | 23 |\n\nAlthough English continuously borrow words from almost every languageexisted in the world, there is also a shift in the importance of the languages(from which the words are borrowed). For example.Latin that was once a richsource of loanwords has now declined its importance as opposed to Japanesedue to the increasing industrial and commercial importance of Japan. \n# FOREIGN LOANWORDS IN ENGLISH\n\nBefore looking at the origins of some loanwords,it is very important tounderstand the difference between popular loanwords and learned \n# Kamisah\n\nloanwords.Popular loanwords are the vocabulary of oral communication thatrevolves around common and everyday subjects. The words are assimilatedsuccessfully in English and have gone through phonological developments thatthe users may not be aware of their foreign origin.Learned words,on the otherhand, are the results of scholastic influences, where during the Old Englishperiod, would be in the church. These words may be confined to a certain classor group of people. For instance, the word cleric(clerk)was a learned word tosignify a clergyman. However,in time, learned words have become part ofeveryday vocabulary as clerk is now used for greater scopes like scholar, scribe, one in charge ofrecord","cbCaieZMnzKfr7xl","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieZMnzKfr7xl","pdf",8671416,14,"English","#
