andbloody,Ma was tired of raising babies. She’d hadthree in five years and one of them had died.Iwas the fourth.Ma's milk dried up when I was nomore than a week old and after that I dependedon the cow.Ma took sick and couldn't even rockme in my crib. So,first thing every morning,Pafilled a bottle, strapped me to his chest with Ma’sshawl and took me along with him.I grew frombaby to child out in the woods with Pa,listeningto the birdsong and breathing in his smell alongwith the sweet scent of pine. \nPa was a quiet man.Say\"quiet\"to somefolks and they think meek.Mild.Timid.Pa wasnone of those things. He didn't waste breath onwords, but when he did speak, every last syllablewas worth hearing.I never once saw him fidgetor make a move that wasn't necessary. But \nPa's stillness was like that of a tiger.Therewas a powerful strength to it.I don't mean hewas menacing;I mean he was mighty.Nothingseemed to scare him. \nOne time, when I was maybe four years old,Pa and I were out setting traps in the woods. The wind changed direction and a strong animalstink came drifting towards me.I wasn'tfar from Pa,not really. But then I heard the \ncrunching of something heavy walking over deadleaves, and a bear came strolling through theundergrowth. That small distance between myfather and me suddenly seemed like a hundredmiles. \nThe bear stopped.Sniffed.Looked right atme.I felt a scream growing in my chest, but Pabreathed out slow, through his teeth. He said, assoft and calm as could be,“Come here,Maggie.Nice and slow.”And he smiled like there wasnothing at all to worry about. \nI fixed my eyes on Pa's and he held me in hisgaze. He pulled me in like a fish on a line, untiI was by his side. The bear had come closer bythen, but Pa wasn't inclined to rush.Slowly, heloaded his rifle. He poured a charge of powder \ninto the barrel, dropped in a wad of cloth and abullet and rammed it all down.Pa was talkingto the bear the whole time.\"I’m doing this justin case,\"he told it.\"I don't want to go shootingyou if I don’t have to.”Pa put a cap into the lockand pulled back the hammer so it was cocked andready. But he didn't take aim.Instead,he sathimself down on the ground next to me,leanedagainst the tree, raised his face to the sun andyawned like he had no troubles in the world.Thebear took a long, long look at him, then turnedaway. \n\"That's right,\"Pa said.“We ain't your nextmeal. And we ain't gonna hurt you none. You goyour sweet way and we'll go ours.” \nThe bear shuffled off into the trees and Ibreathed an almighty sigh of relief. \n\"I’m glad you didn't have to shoot it,\"I said. \n\"So am I,\"Pa replied with a laugh.\"Thisold rifle will take out a pigeon or a squirrelwell enough.I ain't sure it could bring down afull-grown bear.Heck,it would be more use asa club!I could have whacked that old bear todeath.” \n2. \nMy father and I were still crying with laughterby the time we reached home. But before wewent into the cabin Pa said,\"Not a word to yourmother.”The thought of how she’d react to usmeeting a bear wiped the smiles off both ourfaces. \nMa was the opposite of
