not until the Higashiyama period(1443-1490)that floral arrangement took on a definite form. And for more thana thousand years, although the forms and modes of flower arrange-ment have slightly differed, flower arrangement has been woven, into the culture and life of the Japanese people. \nIn Japan, flower arrangement is an art of ornamentation whichoriginates from our inner feeling of love for nature and apprecia-tion of its floral beauty. We feel that lovely flowers or even grassesof the field can in some distant manner influence our busy dailylife. They may be placed in an elegant alcove -the honoured placein a Japanese room-or on the shabby desk of a clerk, yet eachflower plays a part in its own way in bringing beauty and peaceto our lives. \nAbout sixty years ago(1890),many western flowering plants, such as dahlia, hyacinth, tulip and anemone, etc.,came in vogueamong the ladies of the upper class in Japan, and a shop-front of aflorist was decorated by such flowering plants. In those days,UnshinOhara, the grandfather of the present master, was best versed in theart of flower arrangement as a master of the classic form.He startedto use those western flowering plants for Japanese flower arrange-ment,but since they had short stalks,he originated Moribana andHeika as he desired.Up to those times, lessons in and exhibitions ofthe flower arrangements were almost always held in a room of the \ntemple,but then his own and his pupils'works were exhibited in thedepartment stores, and broke down the old customs. \nAfter his death(1916),his son,Koun Ohara, succeeded him inhis work.He made extraordinary efforts to train special masters ofthe Moribana and Heika, and to spread his beautiful worksthroughout the world. He also divided into two styles the Moribana, the first of which is the Moribana putting emphasis on colors;the second of which is the Moribana putting emphasis on naturalbeauty.Koun Ohara died in 1938.The present master,HounOhara, was born a child of such a progressive and illustriousfamily, and he is now engaged in perfecting his new technique ofbringing forth splendor and gracefulness in a more natural form. \nUnlike the Western flower arrangement which is loved forits color primarily, the Japanese flower arrangement takes a barebranch bearing a dull colored fruit,a dead spray of hydrangea, acommon weed, and transforms them into a creation of beauty.Thisis because the Japanese put more emphasis upon the forms ofnature and life than upon the colors themselves. \nTea Ceremony and Flower Arrangement are not only culturalarts:in them is a definite ethical strain coming from the heartand complete composure, without which a perfect bow1 of tea can-not be whisked up,nor a truly beautiful flower arrangementachieved. \nSeptember 1952 \n## andlines of each leaf and flower. \nIn the second style of Moribana, one puts emphasis on naturalbeauty. To depict the unfathomed beauty of nature within thelimited space of a small bowl, and to be able to enjoy the season'sbeauty within the walls of a room:one strives for over and overin Moribana.A single`branch,a few small flowers, some mossto represent the banks of a river-bed:with a few selected
