It will consist of readings, Power Points, films that you will need to stream, and discussion forums. Students will need internet access to use Blackboard and FlipGrid, and stream films. \n“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown. These facts few psychologists will dispute, and their admitted truth must establish for all time the genuineness and dignity of the weirdly horrible tale.” \n-H. P. Lovecraft \nThis class will take an interdisciplinary focus on stories of the supernatural, macabre and uncanny. We will examine folklore, literature, film and popular culture. We will consider the relationship of horror stories to aspects of belief, culture and psychology; different types of horror stories; and the reason for their appeal. Students will be expected to examine their own beliefs and stories; consider the role of such beliefs and stories in the society around them; discuss the stories, films and other materials assigned in class; and create their own stories. The class requires quite a lot of reading, but it should be enjoyable if you like horror stories. \nThis course fulfills the Colonnade Program’s requirements for the Arts and Humanities subcategory of the Explorations category. \nLearning objectives will include the following: \n• Students will develop an understanding of the relationship of narratives of horror and the supernatural to cultural beliefs and attitudes, and to culture more broadly. \n• Students will develop an understanding of the complex relationship between folklore, literature, film and popular culture, as these relate to class topics. \n• Students will survey the history of Gothic/horror stories and films, and learn to put contemporary examples into a broader context. \n• Students will explore their own beliefs and narratives related to class topics. \n• Students will develop skills in the analysis of horror/supernatural narratives, and in the creative use of such narratives. \nBe warned that this class deals with materials that may be disturbing or frightening to some. If you don’t like horror stories, you probably shouldn’t take the class! But if you do, it should be fun. \nCOURSE REQUIREMENTS (525 points total) \n1. Class participation (100 points) . This is based on participation in Blackboard discussion forums, and the FlipGrid introductions. Online discussions will be graded by both the frequency and the substance of participation. To participate, you will need to keep up with the readings, assignments and other materials. There will be no deadlines on Blackboard discussion forums; they will remain open once they are posted. \n2. Weekly journals will be due each Friday, starting the second week of class (100 points) . There are twelve due dates for journals, worth ten points each. Your ten best scores will count toward the final grade, others will be dropped. A prompt and a rubric will be posted on blackboard. \n3. Proposal for final project (25 points).
