in England \nFLIGHT FIVE:AFRICA \nOne morning, soon after the sun had risen,an Arab inthe Sahara Desert looked up into the sky.He screwedup his eyes against the glare of the sun and watched anair-liner far above him,so high that it looked as smallas a tiny toy, silver in the sunlight. The Arab watched itfor a few moments and then turned his attention to hiscamel. It was the leader of a long line, all loaded withbundles and sacks, plodding patiently along an age-oldcaravan route across the Sahara Desert to Timbuctoo. \nThe air-liner was a B.O.A.C.Comet 4,flying southinto Africa at five-hundred miles an hour at a height ofeight miles. Most of the sixty-three passengers wereasleep, lulled by the smooth flight and the luxurious seatswhich tilted back to make beds.Among the passengerswere two children,Alison and John, who were flying toAfrica with their father. \nAlison woke up and looked out of the port-hole.She shook the arm of her young brother. \n\"John,John!”she said excitedly,\"wake up.It'smorning and there's the Sahara Desert below us!” \nJohn opened his eyes, yawned, scratched his head andlooked out at the newly risen sun,and at the empty wastefar below. \nAn hour later the air-liner dipped lower and lower asit prepared to land at Khartoum, the capital of the Sudan. They saw the famous River Nile, the white buildings andthe pretty gardens. \n“Eook down there,Alison,”John said,“on thatroad.See?Soldiers, riding on camels!Aren't theysmart?” \n“The Sudanese are very fine soldiers,”said Daddy.\"They were raised and trained by the British. Here weare in Khartoum, the first stop on our travels aroundAfrica.\" \n:P \nAlison and John spent several days in Khartoum, where Daddy had some business calls to make.Theysaw the Blue Nile, and they explored the city with itsstreets and squares of white buildings, its gardens andgroves of coconut trees.Near the Nile all was fertile, but away from it was the barren desert. \nDaddy told them the story of General Gordon, whowas killed in Khartoum in 1885 after bravely with-standing a siege of more than ten months.John wrotea lot of facts in his notebook and Alison made somedrawings of the native boats on the Nile, the grave anddignified Sudanese, and,of course, the camels. \nFrom Khartoum they flew a thousand miles south toUganda. They landed at Entebbe,on the northern shoreof Lake Victoria, and motored to nearby Kampala, whereDaddy had booked rooms in a hotel. The rooms hadelectric fans to keep them cool, and there were nets onframes over the beds to keep the mosquitoes out at night. The hotel was staffed by cheerful, smiling Africans. \nThey.went for a trip on Lake Victoria and Alison, who had the guide-book,said,\"Lake Victoria is thelargest lake in Africa;half the size of England.\" \n\"And it was named after Queen Victoria,\"said John,“by J.H.Speke,the Englishman who discovered it.” \n\"Here's another fact for you,\"Daddy said.“LakeVictoria is the source of the mighty River Nile, whichflows northwards for nearly four-thousand miles throughthe Sudan and Egypt to the Mediterranean.\" \nThey had the good fortune to see a canoe regatta onthe lake. The Africans paddled their canoes furiouslyas they raced, shouting and singing. It was very exciting. \nOne day Daddy took them for a drive into the countryfrom Kampala.“Well,John,\"he said,“what do youknow about Uganda?” \nJohn opened his notebook.\"Uganda is bigger thanGreat Britain,\"he said,“and it lies astride the Equato","cbCaimvkxZDwJBK7","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimvkxZDwJBK7","pdf",2719285,56,"English","# FLIGHT
