The research ran for 10 weeks at a private Korean information college, with two culinary program classes comprising 19 students each. Quantitative evidence came from repeated-measures quasi-experimental test scores before and after, supported by app tracking and learner self-reports. Results were positive for both approaches, with paper flashcards producing a significantly higher test-score increase. Thesis \nFlashcards and the Memrise App for English Vocabulary Acquisition \n2017 \nWoosong University \nTESOL-MALL \nDonald E. Hobbs \nFlashcards and the Memrise App for English Vocabulary Acquisition \nDr. David Kent \nSubmitted to the thesis committee \n2017 December \nWoosong University \nTESOL-MALL \nDonald E. Hobbs \nAbstract \nThis study examines the effectiveness of two different personal study methods for the acquisition of English language vocabulary – paper flashcards and Memrise, a popular vocabulary learning mobile application (app) . The study was conducted over 10 weeks at a private Korean information college (정보대) offering a variety of 2-year programs. Two culinary program classes of 19 students each participated in it. A repeated measure, quasi-experiment based on test scores before-and-after provided the quantitative data, along with student self-reports and tracking information from the app itself. Several qualitative measures were also used: questionnaires, focus groups, individual interviews, and finally, the personal experiences and observations of both myself and the other instructor. Results were positive for both study methods, although the paper flashcard users showed a significantly higher increase in test scores than those who used Memrise. The author makes several recommendations about the use of mobile flashcard apps outside of the classroom for increasing the likelihood that students will routinely and effectively use one to study vocabulary and also proposes ideas for future research hailing from the present study. \nDonald E. Hobbs \nDepartment of TESOL– MALL \nWoosong University \nAcknowledgements \nI would like to thank my advisor, Dr. David Kent, for imparting a bit of his vast knowledge and expertise on the subject of Multimedia Assisted Language Learning (MALL) to me. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the MALL courses here at Woosong University. He deserves credit as well for his role as my thesis advisor. Secondly, I would like to thank Dr. Eric Reynolds who is the perfect man for the job of Head of Department; he was always willing to lend an ear and a bit of advice whenever I needed it. Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Love, whom I became acquainted with only during my final semester in the TESOL-MALL program. I wish that I had taken other courses with him. \nIn short, all three of these professors who made up my thesis committee and who were my sole instructors in this Master's program were always extremely helpful and flexible, which allowed me to expediently finish the degree without too much pain or suffering. \nTable of Contents \nAbstract i \nAcknowledgments ii \nTable of Contents iii – v \nI.
