The review summarizes how galaxy SED models are built, how multiwavelength datasets are assembled, and how observed photometry is matched to model SEDs to produce realistic measurements and uncertainties. It highlights key ingredients—data quality, model quality, and fitting techniques—and evaluates SED fitting for deriving redshift, stellar masses, star-formation rates, dust masses, and metallicities, while warning against over-interpretation and noting remaining challenges.",{"@graph":69,"@context":122},[70,84,105],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":40,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/research-report/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/fitting-the-integrated-spectral-energy-distributions-of-galaxies/505135/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/fitting-the-integrated-spectral-energy-distributions-of-galaxies/505135.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"Hazel","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-15","2026-10-04",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":34},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",{"@type":106,"mainEntity":107},"FAQPage",[108,114,118],{"name":109,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":111},"What does SED fitting aim to accomplish for galaxies?","Question",{"text":112,"@type":113},"SED fitting analyzes an observed galaxy SED and derives one or more physical properties simultaneously by matching models to the data, rather than relying on a single spectral feature for a single parameter.","Answer",{"name":115,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":116},"Which wavelength range and datasets are central to the reviewed approach?",{"text":117,"@type":113},"The review focuses on ultraviolet to far-infrared (UV to FIR) galaxy SEDs and describes how multiwavelength datasets are created to support model fitting.",{"name":119,"@type":110,"acceptedAnswer":120},"What physical properties can be derived from SED fitting?",{"text":121,"@type":113},"With appropriate care, SED fitting can be used to estimate properties such as redshift, stellar masses, star formation rates, dust masses, and metallicities, along with realistic uncertainties.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":83,"og:type":124,"og:title":65,"og:site_name":95,"og:description":67},"article",{"robots":126,"canonical":83},"index,follow",{"doc_id":128,"site_id":62},505135,1791157586,{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":131},{"doc_id":128,"user_id":132,"nickname":92,"user_avatar":133,"doc_module":4,"category_id":39,"category_name":40,"doc_title":65,"doc_description":67,"doc_content":134,"file_id":135,"file_url":136,"file_type":137,"file_size":138,"view_count":34,"is_deleted":4,"is_public":8,"is_downloadable":8,"audit_status":8,"page_count":139,"language":140,"language_code":63,"site_id":62,"html_lang":63,"table_of_contents":141,"faqs":142,"seo_title":143,"seo_description":67,"update_tm":144,"read_time":145},137441390410,"https://ap-avatar.wpscdn.com/avatar/2000252f4ab5702993?_k=1776741390130283984","Fitting the integrated Spectral Energy Distributions of Galaxies \narXiv : 1008 .0395v1 [ astro-ph .CO] 2 Aug 2010 \nJakob Walcher 􀀏 Brent Groves 􀀏 Tams Budavri 􀀏 \nDaniel Dale \nContents \n1 Introduction 2 \n2 Modelling galaxy SEDs 3 \n2.1 Stars ..................... 3 \n2.1.1 Simple stellar populations ..... 3 \n2.1.2 Validation of SSP predictions ... 5 \n2.1.3 Current Issues with SSPs ...... 6 \n2.2 The ISM around the stars .......... 7 \n2.2.1 Interstellar gas ........... 7 \n2.2.2 Interstellar dust ........... 8 \n2.2.3 Combining stellar and dust emission 11 \n2.3 Evolution of Galaxies ............ 13 \n3 Constructing observed galaxy SEDs 15 \n3.1 Spectral response curve and resolution ... 15 \n3.2 Spatial resolution, aperture bias and matching 15 \n3.3 Examples of multi-wavelength datasets .. 16 \n3.3.1 The Spitzer Local Volume Legacyspatially resolved SEDs ...... 16 \n3.3.2 The Herschel ATLAS -unresolved SEDs ................ 16 \n3.3.3 The SWIRE templates ....... 17 \n3.3.4 Further examples .......... 17 \nJakob Walcher \nResearch and Scientific Support Department, European Space Agency, Keplerlaan 1, 2200AG Noordwijk, The Netherlands \nBrent Groves \nSterrewacht Leiden, Leiden University, P.O. Model predictions and fitting procedures have improved significantly over this time, attempting to keep up with the vastly increased volume and quality of available data. We review here the field of SED fitting, describing the modelling of ultraviolet to infrared galaxy SEDs, the creation of multiwavelength datasets, and the methods used to fit model SEDs to observed galaxy data sets. We touch upon the achievements and challenges in the major ingredients of SED fitting, with a special emphasis on describing the interplay between the quality of the available data, the quality of the available models, and the best fitting technique to use in order to obtain a realistic measurement as well as realistic uncertainties. We conclude that SED fitting can be used e􀀋ectively to derive a range of physical properties of galaxies, such as redshift, ste","cbCairNe7XksbFAx","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCairNe7XksbFAx","pdf",3903687,54,"English","# Introduction\n## Modelling galaxy SEDs\n## Constructing observed galaxy SEDs\n## Methods and validation of SED fitting\n## Results of SED Fitting: Photometric redshifts\n## Results of SED Fitting: Physical Properties\n## Conclusions","[{\"question\":\"What does SED fitting aim to accomplish for galaxies?\",\"answer\":\"SED fitting analyzes an observed galaxy SED and derives one or more physical properties simultaneously by matching models to the data, rather than relying on a single spectral feature for a single parameter.\"},{\"question\":\"Which wavelength range and datasets are central to the reviewed approach?\",\"answer\":\"The review focuses on ultraviolet to far-infrared (UV to FIR) galaxy SEDs and describes how multiwavelength datasets are created to support model fitting.\"},{\"question\":\"What physical properties can be derived from SED fitting?\",\"answer\":\"With appropriate care, SED fitting can be used to estimate properties such as redshift, stellar masses, star formation rates, dust masses, and metallicities, along with realistic uncertainties.\"}]","Fitting the integrated Spectral Energy Distributions of Galaxies | PDF",1791091403,136]
