Each coin has a gold side and a silver side, each with an identical scorpion seal. The wizard who guards the coins agrees to let you have them, but he won't let you leave the room unless you separate the hoard into two piles with an equal number of coins with the silver side facing up in each. You've just counted the total number of silverside-up coins—20—when the lights go out. In the dark, you have no way of knowing which half of a coin is silver and which half is gold. \nHow do you divide the pile without looking at it? \nThe Prisoner Problem \nHint: For more dramatic effect, have hats ready and act this out in class before they begin working on cracking the riddle. The kinesthetic and visual experience adds a nice layer to the overall problem. \nThree prisoners were being held jail with no hope of ever getting out. The warden, in a moment of weakness and with a full heart, decided he wanted to give one of the prisoners an opportunity to earn his freedom. So one day, he brought all three prisoners out to the courtyard of the prison and had them stand in a line, one behind the other. He then showed them five hats, three white, and two black. After showing them all five hats, the warden hid all the hats in a box, and blindfolded each prisoner so they could see nothing. From these five hats, the warden selected three and put one on each of the prisoners’heads. \nThe warden then declared: One by one, I will remove your blindfold, and if you can prove to me, logically, what color hat you yourself are wearing, I will set you free. You must stare in front of you and you may not talk to the other prisoners or ask any questions. If you cannot prove which color hat you are wearing, you will return to your cell to serve the rest of your sentence. \nThe warden proceeds to remove the blindfold off of the prisoner in the back of the line. He looks at the two prisoners in front of him, but unfortunately, he is unable to prove which color he is wearing, and he returns to his cell. \nThe warden removes the blindfold from the second prisoner in line. Now, this prisoner has heard that the first one is unable to guess correctly, and he can see the other prisoner in front of him. However, he also can not successfully prove which color hat he is wearing. So, the second prisoner returns to his cell as well. \nThe third and final prisoner – the one in front of the line -has his blindfold removed. The warden thought for sure that this prisoner was also doomed to return to his cell. Astonishingly, the third prisoner exclaimed,“Clearly my hat is !” \nHe also went on to successfully tell the warden exactly why the hat he was wearing was indeed the color he stated. \nHow did this third prisoner know the color of his hat? What was that color? \nDark Coin Answer: All you need to do is remove any 20 coins from the pile at random and flip them over. No matter what combination of coins you choose, you will suddenly have a number of silver-side-up coins that's equal to whatever is left in the pile. If every coin you pulled was originally gold-side-up, flipping them would give you 20 more silver-side-up coins. If you chose 13 gold-side-up coins and seven of the silver-side coins, you'd be left with 13 silver coins in the first pile and 13 silver ones in your new stack after flipping it over. \nVideo: [https://youtu.be/pnSw8g3DPHw](https://youtu.be/pnSw8g3DPHw) \nPrisoner Answer: The third prisoner’s hat is WHITE! There are seven possible arrangements of these hats: \nBack \nW \nB \nW \nW \nB \nB \nW \nB \nW \nW \nB \nW \nB \nW \nB \nB \nB \nW \nW \nW \nW \nFront-wall \nIf the first permutation were correct, then the prisoner in the back of the line would have seen the only two black hats and known his was white. But obviously he did not. \nThe second prisoner looks at the prisoner in front of him.
