It explains how year-to-year regression fluctuations are controlled using the most recent three years of data, why average LSAT scores are preferred for comparisons, and how correlations are calculated and interpreted. It also outlines security expectations for electronic report transmission and details key data requirements and collection steps through ACES2.","# First-Year Performance LSAT andUGPA Correlation StudiesReference Guide\n\nVersion 1.0 / Proprietary and Confidential \nJANUARY 2021 \nTable of Contents \n1 Overview ......................................................................................................................................... 1 \n2 Data Requirements .......................................................................................................................... 2 \n2.1 General.................................................................................................................................... 2 \n2.2 Data Collection......................................................................................................................... 2 \n2.2.1 General Data Collection Instructions ................................................................................. 2 \n2.3 Required Data Fields................................................................................................................ 3 \n2.4 Record Layout.......................................................................................................................... 4 \n2.5 Status Codes ........................................................................................................................... 4 \n2.5.1 Students Who Completed Their First Year of Law Studies ................................................ 4 \n2.5.2 Students Who Did Not Complete Their First Year of Law Studies ...................................... 5 \n3 Transferring Data Using ACES2...................................................................................................................................................................... 5 \n3.1 Receiving Data from LSAC....................................................................................................... 5 \n## 1 Overview\n\nLSAC correlation studies provided by LSAC give you important information about the predictivevalidity of LSAT scores and undergraduate grade-point averages (UGPAs) at your law schooland their relationship to your students’first-year law school grades. Previous correlation studieshave confirmed that the LSAT score is a good predictor of first-year law school performance. The findings have also verified that the combination of LSAT score and UGPA is usually betterat predicting first-year performance than either factor alone. \nYear-to-year changes in the regression weights for LSAC correlation studies are common andhave been the subject of numerous research studies. Research shows that combining the threemost recent years of data controls these fluctuations. If less than three years of data areavailable foryour school, the results may not be as stable and representative as they would bewith three years of data. \nResearch also shows that average LSAT score is generally a better predictor of first-yearperformance than highest or most recent LSAT score. Therefore, for comparison, a reportbased on average LSAT scores, where multiple scores are available for individual students, willbe included with reports based on highest LSAT scores. \nFor security and timely communication, transmission of reports will be handled electronicallyunless LSAC receives a request from you for paper communication. LSAC may use non -personally identifiable information to improve LSAC’s product and service offerings to lawschools. By continuing to participate inthe LSAC correlation studies, you are agreeing to thesecure electronic transmission of reports from LSAC and LSAC’s noted use of data. \nCorrelation coefficients are a measure of the linear relationship between two variables. Valuesrange from 1 for a perfect positive correlation to −1 for a perfect negative correlation. Themagnitude of the coefficient indicates the strength of the correlation. A value of zero indicatesthat there is no correlation between the two variables. \nLSAC correlation studies report the correlations among LSAT score, UGPA, and
