Framework(NCF),2005,recommends that children's life at school must be linkedto their life outside the school. This principle marks adeparture from the legacy of bookish learning whichcontinues to shape our system and causes a gap betweenthe school, home and community. The syllabi andtextbooks developed on the basis of NCF signify an attemptto implement this basic idea. They also attempt todiscourage rote learning and the maintenance of sharpboundaries between different subject areas. We hope thesemeasures will take us significantly further in the directionof a child-centered system of education outlined in theNational Policy of Education(1986). \nThe success of this effort depends on the steps thatschool principals and teachers will take to encouragechildren to reflect on their own learning and to pursueimaginative activities and questions. We must recognisethat, given space, time and freedom, children generate newknowledge by engaging with the information passed on tothem by adults.Treating the prescribed textbook as thesole basis of examination is one of the key reasons whyother resources and sites of learning are ignored.Inculcating creativity and initiative is possible ifwe perceiveand treat children as participants in learning, not asreceivers of a fixed body of knowledge. \nThese aims imply considerable change in schoolroutines and mode of functioning.Flexibility in the dailytime-table is as necessary as rigour in implementing theannual calendar so that the required number of teachingdays are actually devoted to teaching. The methods usedfor teaching and evaluation will also determine how effectivethis textbook proves for making children's life at school ahappy experience, rather than a source of stress orboredom.Syllabus
