The narrative explains the economic importance of spices and the desire to find the safest route to the Spice Islands. After seeking support from Spain, Magellan leads an expedition in 1519, crosses the equator, reaches Brazil, overwintering near Rio de la Plata, and faces mutiny and a shipwreck.","First Around the World Ferdinand Magellan \nEnglish Non Fiction \nFirst Around the World \nFerdinand Magellan \nA biography \nby Carol Smith \nImages by Tony Smith. \nEnglish \nUnited Kingdom \nCopyright © 2020, SIL Cameroon \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/)[ ](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/)[You may not use this work for commercial purposes. His parents died while he was still a boy so he enlisted as a sailor and spent some years sailing with the Portuguese fleet to Africa, India and the Spice Islands. Spices were the centre of world economy at that time, much like oil or gold is today. They were highly valued for flavouring and preserving food but could not be grown in Europe due to the cold climate, so everyone wanted to discover the quickest and safest sea route to the Spice Islands. \nAfter a disagreement with the King of Portugal, Magellan went to the King of Spain to get his support for an expedition to the Spice Islands by sailing west. Nobody had found a route to the East by going west right around the world before . \nIn September 1519 Magellan set out as commander of a fleet of five ships. He crossed the equator in November and arrived on the coast of Brazil in December. Here the ships took on new supplies of food and water but bad weather conditions caused them to delay. \nThey continued to sail south along the coast until they reached Rio de la Plata in February. They had to establish a temporary settlement here to overwinter until the weather improved. In April a mutiny broke out lead by three of the ship’s captains and Magellan had to fight to gain control again. \nAt the end of the winter the journey began again. One ship was sent down the coast and was wrecked in a sudden storm, but all the sailors survived and were rescued.","cbCaif1C5638qL16","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaif1C5638qL16","pdf",2094983,1,20,"English","en",105,"# Ferdinand Magellan's background\n## The spice route and sailing aims\n## Seeking support
