track, filled with potters'artifacts, with a paid-off mortgage. \nA mixed marriage of multi-talentedpartners,welded for life by clayand determination; \nThe senior citizen of local craft groups, and prime mover in stimulatingawareness of pots ‘n things. \nALL THAT AND MORE... \nThe Guild is a sort of democracy(with a bothersomeset of rules to keep the democracy intact)-and a kind of fraternity, whose headstrong personalitiesfight a little, talk clay a lot, eat, drink, andplay together- \nand a school to perpetuate the species- \nand an idea exhange where fervor and passiongently prod each potter to explore, \nexpand, \ngamble, \nrefine, \nand perfect- \nBORN JUST AWORKSHOP,THE COMING OF AGE REVEALS- \nAn unshakable regardfor Guild before self- \nA studio system so successfulit has been copied in distant places- \nAn idea that endured and surpassedthe wildest dreams of the nine foundersof an alley shop in 1949. \nForeword \nby Jeri Hollister \nThis exhibition is the culmination of over a year of work on an idea that survivingand thriving for fifty years as a cooperative organization,is worth celebrating bytelling others how it we did it.The exhibition is also a tribute to our founders and agesture of gratitude for the inspiration and hard work of the members who built anorganization that is alive and well a half-century after its conception. \nFormed as a cooperative for ceramic artists in the summer of 1949,and legallyincorporated in 1950,the Potters Guild in Ann Arbor,Michigan may be one of theoldest surviving cooperative workshops of its kind in the country. The studio servesover fifty members year round and up to 30 students every September through May.Ceramic classes are taught by members, local artists, and master of fine art studentsand graduates from the nearby university programs.Workshops are heldapproximately twice a year, bringing to the area accomplished artists who sharetheir talents with the participants. The Potters Guild holds two exhibitions/sales peryear on the premises, and has been involved in the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair sinceits inception 41 years ago. \nWe still have a founding member in the area,William Lewis,Professor Emeritusfrom the University of Michigan School of Art,and a small number of long timemembers who began to work at the Guild in its first decade. While we still havethese valuable resources,we wanted to record some of the history of the Guild:howit was conceived, how it was organized, how it grew, and how it continues to functionas a place where the craft is studied, taught and practiced. This catalog offers acompilation of thoughts and memories from present day Guild members. We arelucky to have
