Their shine comes from a chemical process involving luciferase and luciferin reacting with existing oxygen in the firefly’s body to produce bright light. The glow works as a communication signal, helping males attract females and triggering mating, while larvae use it to deter predators with toxic-tasting chemicals. Fireflies also appear in many species, and groups can illuminate whole gardens.","Portrait \nEnglish Science \nFireflies are small winged insects that glow in the dark. \nWhy do they shine? What creates the spark within them? \nThey’re bright and twinkling, like little stars. I wish I could glow like them, but I can’t. \nCan anyone tell me why they glow? \n1 \nImagine a dark moonless night, and you are in the woods with your classmates. You lose your way. What would you do? \nWould you try contacting your friends by flashing your torchlight? \n2 \nWell, fireflies do the same. However, they have an unlimited supply of light within themselves! Fireflies never need to worry about fused light bulbs or electricity tariffs. They seem happy just to fly around and glow. \nTheir glow is a signal to say,“Hey, look! I’m here!” \n3 \nThe glow inside the firefly is produced by three things, a called luciferase, a called luciferin, and . \n are special molecules used to create body structures, such as muscles, bones and skin. are natural colouring substances found in animals and plants. When luciferase and luciferin meet inside the tiny belly of the firefly, they react with the \n4 already found in there. \nThen, a celebration takes place like a soft firework display, and bright light is produced. This is the ‘glow’ of the firefly. \nFireflies are bioluminescent, but they are not the only creatures that create light. Different types of fish and marine creatures also produce their own lights. \n5 \nThe glow of the firefly functions like alight switch. The firefly periodically turns its glow on and off. It sends a special ‘message’ from its brain to the‘light organ’ inside its abdomen. Soon the chemical reaction begins and the glow is produced. \n6 \nThe male fireflies use their ‘glow’ to call out to the females. Once the females see this special glow, they respond by switching on their own lights. The fireflymates soon meet, and baby fireflies get created. \nFemale fireflies prefer ‘flashy males’that can blink the longest or at a faster pace. \n7 \nThe younger fireflies, or the larvae, mainly use their glow to chase predators away. \nThe chemicals within their bodies are toxic, and have a horrible taste. Creatures that try to eat them, will spit them out, and go hunting elsewhere for tastier munchies. \n8 \nThere are more than 2,000 species of fireflies on this earth. \nDuring springtime, on dark nights, you may spot a few of them flitting around brightly. \nThough fireflies are tiny, when they group together, their glow can light up an entire garden. Sounds incredible, doesn’t it? \n9","cbCaiapRw9oq32i0","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiapRw9oq32i0","pdf",5736456,1,19,"English","en",105,"# Fireflies and Their Glow\n## What Makes Fireflies Shine\n## How Glow Works Like a Switch\n## Glow as Communication and Defense\n## Species Count and Group Lighting","[{\"question\":\"What chemical process produces a firefly’s glow?\",\"answer\":\"The glow is created when luciferase and luciferin meet inside the firefly and react with the oxygen already present in its body, producing bright light.\"},{\"question\":\"Why do male fireflies glow?\",\"answer\":\"Male fireflies use their glow to signal and call out to females.
