Their light comes from a chemical reaction involving luciferase and luciferin, plus natural elements already present in the firefly’s body. The glow acts as a signal to communicate, attracts mates through coordinated flashing, and helps larvae chase predators away using toxic chemicals and a bad taste. With over 2,000 species, their grouped glow can illuminate entire gardens.","Landscape \nEnglish \n1 \nFireflies are small winged insects that glow in the dark. \nWhy do they shine? What creates the spark within them? \nThey’re bright and twinkling, like little stars. I wish I could glow like them, but I can’t. \nCan anyone tell me why they glow? \n2 \nImagine a dark moonless night, and you are in the woods with your classmates. You lose your way. What would you do? \nWould you try contacting your friends by flashing \nyour torchlight? \n3 \nWell, fireflies do the same. However, they have an unlimited supply of light within themselves! \nFireflies never need to worry about fused light bulbs or electricity tariffs. They seem happy just to fly around and glow. \nTheir glow is a signal to say,“Hey, look! I’m here!” \n4 \nThe glow inside the firefly is produced by three things, a called luciferase, \na called luciferin, and . \n are special molecules used to create body structures, such as muscles, bones and skin. are natural colouring substances found in animals and plants. When luciferase and luciferin meet inside the tiny belly of the firefly, they react with the already found in there \n5 \nThen, a celebration takes place like a soft firework display, and bright light is produced. This is the ‘glow’ of the firefly. \nFireflies are bioluminescent, but they are not the only creatures that create light. Different types of fish and marine creatures also produce their own lights. \n6 \nThe glow of the firefly functions like a light switch. The firefly periodically turns its glow on and off. It sends a special‘message’ from its brain to the‘light organ’ inside its abdomen. Soon the chemical reaction begins and the glow is produced. \n7 \nThe male fireflies use their‘glow’ to call out to the females. Once the females see this special glow, they respond by switching on their own lights. The firefly-mates soon meet, and baby fireflies get created. \nFemale fireflies prefer ‘flashy males’ that can blink the longest or at a faster pace. \n8 \nThe younger fireflies, or the larvae, mainly use their glow to chase predators away. \nThe chemicals within their bodies are toxic, and have a horrible taste. Creatures that try to eat them, will spit them out, and go hunting elsewhere for tastier munchies. \n9 \nThere are more than 2,000 species of fireflies on this earth. \nDuring springtime, on dark nights, you may spot a few of them flitting around brightly. \nThough fireflies are tiny, when they group together, their glow can light up an entire garden. \nSounds incredible, doesn’t it?","cbCaipQGZV9PjWiH","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipQGZV9PjWiH","pdf",622755,1,19,"English","en",105,"# Fireflies and Their Glow\n## Chemical Reaction Behind Bioluminescence\n## How Fireflies Use Light\n## Species and Seasonal Viewing","[{\"question\":\"What causes fireflies to glow in the dark?\",\"answer\":\"Their glow is produced by a chemical reaction involving luciferase and luciferin inside the firefly’s body.\"},{\"question\":\"How do fireflies use their light to communicate?\",\"answer\":\"They flash to send signals, such as attracting attention and coordinating responses between male and female fireflies.\"},{\"question\":\"Why do young fireflies (larvae) glow?\",\"answer\":\"Larvae use their glow to help chase predators away, supported by toxic chemicals that taste horrible to attackers.\"}]",1784311469,29,{"code":4,"msg":30,"data":31},"ok",{"site_id":24,"language":23,"slug":32,"title":13,"keywords":33,"description":14,"schema_data":34,"social_meta":85,"head_meta":87,"extra_data":89,"updated_unix":27},"fireflies-why-cant-we-glow-like-fireflies","",{"@graph":35,"@context":84},[36,53,67],{"@type":37,"itemListElement":38},"BreadcrumbList",[39,43,47,50],{"item":40,"name":41,"@type":42,"position":20},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":44,"name":45,"@type":42,"position":46},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":48,"name":12,"@type":42,"position":49},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/lifestyle/",3,{"item":51,"name":13,"@type":42,"position":52},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/fireflies-why-cant-we-glow-like-fireflies/92066/",4,{"url":51,"name":13,"@type":54,"author":55,"headline":13,"publisher":57,"fileFormat":60,"inLanguage":23,"description":14,"dateModified":61,"datePublished":61,"encodingFormat":60,"isAccessibleForFree":62,"interactionStatistic":63},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":56},"Person",{"url":40,"name":58,"@type":59},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-17",true,{"@type":64,"interactionType":65,"userInteractionCount":4},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":66},"ViewAction",{"@type":68,"mainEntity":69},"FAQPage",[70,76,80],{"name":71,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":73},"What causes fireflies to glow in the dark?","Question",{"text":74,"@type":75},"Their glow is produced by a chemical reaction involving luciferase and luciferin inside the firefly’s body.","Answer",{"name":77,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":78},"How do fireflies use their light to communicate?",{"text":79,"@type":75},"They flash to send signals, such as attracting attention and coordinating responses between male and female fireflies.",{"name":81,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":82},"Why do young fireflies (larvae) glow?",{"text":83,"@type":75},"Larvae use their glow to help chase predators away, supported by toxic chemicals that taste horrible to attackers.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":51,"og:type":86,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":58,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":88,"canonical":51},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":24},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":91},[92,96,100,104,109,114,119,124,129,132,134],{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":93,"show_sort_weight":94,"slug":95},"Story & Novel",90,"story-novel",{"id":46,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":97,"show_sort_weight":98,"slug":99},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":52,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":101,"show_sort_weight":102,"slug":103},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":105,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":106,"show_sort_weight":107,"slug":108},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":110,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":111,"show_sort_weight":112,"slug":113},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":115,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":116,"show_sort_weight":117,"slug":118},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":120,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":121,"show_sort_weight":122,"slug":123},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":125,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":126,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":128},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":127,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":130,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":131},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":11,"slug":133},"lifestyle",{"id":21,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":45,"category_name":135,"show_sort_weight":105,"slug":136},"General","general"]
