evening with a friend who wasthen a writer for a weekly news magazine.I needed some freshair. \nI met him at his office on a Friday evening, the night themagazine is put to bed.Fortunately,by the time I arrived hehad already finished his story for the week.Nonetheless, wehad to wait for a while because his story was being submittedto the various reporters who had supplied him the informationand had the right to suggest changes. \nAs he was scurrying in and out between phone conver-sations with them,he tossed a copy of his story to me,andannounced \"There is only one sentence I won't change.\"It wasobviously a challenge from the journalist to the professor. When he returned a few minutes later,I read him the sentence. He was pleased;I'd gotten it right.\"I thought the zeugma wasparticularly handsome,\"I said.Immediately his eyes glazedover and he reached for his coat.It was only a few hours later, after a pleasant dinner, that he finally asked,“All right, whatthe hell is a zeugma?” \nWhat the hell is a zeugma? It is just a figure of speech, arather witty one that I had never had the nerve to try.Myfriend had tried one just that day;and he knew he had written anice sentence. What I knew was a name and definition thatmight help him isolate what was particularly striking aboutthat sentence. This could be useful because sooner or later he \nPreface·FIGURES OF SPEECH \nwould find himself in a position where he might want to tryanother one. And,in fact,I could supply him with a series offamous zeugmas, from Shakespeare, the Bible,AlexanderPope.I wouldn't have to comment on these examples;hecould see for himself the range of uses. \nIn one sense he already had a greater command ofzeugmas thanI did,for he had made one—I was learning fromhim.Zeugmas and the rest of the stylistic bestiary are ofsignificance only insofar as they help us learn to write betterThe professor learns from the journalist, and they both learnfrom Shakespeare. The figures are not essential in this process, but they can facilitate it. \nUsually they do nothing of the kind.Usually they arehoarded as the arcane argot of the professional humanist.Graduate studentsin literature eagerly buy little dictionaries sothat when a monograph intones about later Shakespeare'spenchant for the anthimeria, they will have a place to look itup.So they look it up,while their own prose often becomesmore and more like a monograph's,a groaning misery to read. \nWriting is not like chemical engineering. We shouldn'tlearn the figures of speech the way we learn the periodic tableof elements. We shouldn't because we are learning not abouthypothetical structures in things, but about real potentialitieswithin our language, within ourselves. \nLearning about the figures of speech should be less likelearning about the periodictable of elements than like learninghow to model clay.To ask a sentence if it has a zeugma is notlike asking a
