disturbingissue of bullying in Malaysianboarding schools. \nI read of a Form Two studentwho died last month, and it wassaid that a Form Four boy mayhave been involved in the tragicincident. And soon after that,Iread of yet another death, that ofa 16-year-old girl. \nReaders might remember that Ihave written before about theissues I have with Malaysia's pub-lic schools-that they are unsafe. \nI feel so strongly about this thatI have vowed neverto send any ofmy grandchildren to them, that Iwill work hard and scrimp andsave to pay for them to attendprivate schools. \nI have shared my views on howto improve public schools previ-ously,but there are so many ofthem that it is a daunting prospectto tackle. \nBoarding schools, however, areeasier to work on immediately asthere are,I gather from onesource of information, only 160. \nI think that it is high time thenation gives this issue the highestpriority -the highest followingthe issue of the deaths of childrenin the previous version of theNational Service programme(something I had followed closely \nOver the top \nas my children had had to serve). \nWhen it comes to what are con-sidered our premier schools-theboarding schools-I believe dras-tic measures must be consideredif we are to stop more deaths. \nI apologise in advance if I comeacross as overly dramatic, but as aparent, considering the death of achild has me practically foamingat the mouth. \nFirstly,I think that all boardingschools must be closed immedi-ately for at least six months so acomplete safety audit can be con-ducted by a professional organi-sation that deals with mattersrelated to school safety and secu-rity. \nWe cannot allow head teachersto conduct these audits,or anyonefrom the Education Ministry -none of them are qualified. \nAll 160 schools must be closed \nand only reopened after all safety of bullying.equipment-including CCTV cam-Ive also suggested this beforeeras -is installed, tested, andfor public schools but perhaps itactive, with two-man teams mon-would be easier to implement initoring cameras at all times.the relatively closed environs ofSecurity should include staffboarding schools:Every threerostered to walk the grounds atmonths, form teachers mustdifferent times of the day andinterview every student privatelynight, perhaps three or four timesto check on their welfare. \nIf these private sessions revealstudents who exhibit a tendencytowards bullying or if some arenamed as bullies, all names mustbe compiled and the studentsobserved. \nin 24 hours.Drones could alsohelp with such sweeps. \nSecondly,once classes are over, junior and senior students cannotbe allowed to interact unlessthere is adult supervision. If thereare clubs or sport teams that mustmeet, the teachers in charge mustbe present and must be held fullyresponsible if anything occurs. \nThey could be called in forcounseling with their parentspresent if the behaviour becomessevere to the point of expulsion. \nThirdly,all administrative staffmembers must be made awarethat they will be demoted oneposition if any severe bullyingoccurs, especially if there is seri-ous bodily injury,on their watch. \nOne educator professed theidea of“you touch, you go”a cou-ple of years ago to deal with esca-lating bullying in schools, but it isobviously not working. \nStudents have “touched”andbecome killers since then. \nAt this time,I do not think thereare any such rules to make surethe administrative staff careabout the welfare o all studentsbeyond classes. \nWith complete CCTV coverageand monitoring stations, with reg-ular patrols of school grounds, with teacher training and regularprivate interviews with
